If the image files are in the ccdata/images folder, and if they are called imageFullcat and imageMain etc, then they are still there. Is this right?

Yes, the is the correct location. You will then have to manually re-associate each image with each product. That is why I suggested the CSV option. That can save you a lot of time.
Just make sure in the future, not to move files around outside of the software. That will cause things to break again and you will have to start this process all over again.

You can download the example csv file and use it as a template. This is no quick fix though Janet. It is going to take some work to get this file formated correctly.
No matter which option you go with, be prepared for a few long hours of work.

Janet do yourself a favor and setup a test shop just on your pc and put in one category and one sub category then add products and image for that product along with all the other details then export the cvs. Now open that file with excel and it will already be in the correct format for you to work with. Excel will allow you to copy and paste all the necessary data but make sure it's the same format as the data exported.
