Forgive me if this is widely known, if I recall a year or two ago it's the reason I didn't use this software for my store. I need to know about payment processing. I use a combination of paypal and my own merchant account. Can I do this with the shopping cart software? If not, will this change in the future?

It depends on the merchant account you have!
If you have it with Worldpay or Authorize.net then they are both supported.

Alternatively, there is no need to have a merchant account at all when using Paypal as the payment gateway as it does not require your customers to have a Paypal account. They can checkout using just their card.
