I have my store setup using standard PayPal as my checkout and I've had several people have issues with the PayPal button (reads Pay "Now with PayPal"). They all assume that they are paying with PayPal and not their credit card. Further more, I have the list of accepted credit cards shown and they all try to click on those images, then call me saying that my store is 'broken' and won't let them pay!

Is there any way to change that PayPal button or at least add some text to inform people that PayPal is just the clearing house and that they don't have to have a PayPal account.

I've looked into the SCDP and can't do anything there either.

I try to mitigate confusion with a bit of explanatory text. (Hoping that people will actually bother to READ it...)

You could also try uploading a custom button of your own design, naming it btn_xpressCheckout.gif to replace the button that is currently displaying.
