Image Alt tags

Hi all ~ this is basic I guess? An online entity has pointed out that my site may not have the best image alt tags, or any in some cases. [ they were not trying to sell me anything at the time ].
I have read about image alt tags vs image title tags, but not much in plain talk. I assumed my image titles would suffice. My images are all named & filed specifically so that I can locate the correct one when I need it re: "trifari emerald rhinestone necklace front view.jpg" Then the appropriate image is uploaded to the corresponding item in SCCP.....

I assume now, that this is not the same as an image alt tag? I am a bit confused as to where in the program the alt tag would be placed? Or does the program generate the alt tag based on the image titles of the images used?

Any help or ideas and clarification of this would be great, as I have not seen it covered for SCCP.
Thanks in advance! :D

The alt tag is placed in the <img src="thisimg.jpg" alt="Description of Image"> That way, when someone is coming to your site that has a vison disability they are able to have the screen reader they are using read the image description to them. This is not a long discription just something that discribes what the photo is. Like Main logo for your logo.

What you name the image has nothing to do with the Alt Tag. :P

Hope this helps.

Alt tags are also what people see if for some reason they cannot view your images :) This then tells them what is "supposed" to be in that spot on the site.

Should this be placed in the product description using the html tool in SCCP?

I get the idea of what they do for people and web crawlers, guess I just don't know where to physically "place" this tag within the program. I must be missing something very basic.

Thanks !

I really need to buy the Super Pack so I can get these programs and play around with them so I can better answer these questions. I have not used SCCP but I would say that when you insert a picture on your site, that there are properties that you can change to add an Alt tag. So, my suggestion is take a look at how you add an image and see if there are any settings that you can set! :D

If not, then you could use the HTML insert tool.

Sir Age adding images to SCCP is strictly drag and drop, the only WYSIWYG option is naming the image outside of CC before installing it (and they appear as image_large_1234), its that " I dont do code issue" SCCP can be entirely set up without touching any code at all.

Heres a google search (925 past masters ring) images search result for one of my SCCP product images with no code input from me (try it) when found in images my image name is found

(This is the image it will find) http://www.google.com/imgres?um=1&h … 9,r:6,s:18

So if the person asking question in thread, does not do code, they won't understand what it is, or how to do it (ie) Me ;)
Started using CC VSD in January 2009, I don't do HTML code, Sales from CC site exceeding expectations taken me out of semi-retirement

Sir Age & Viv, I understand a little about code. Not much but can do some!:D Now that you bring it up Viv, I have found some of my images in Google image searches.

I never thought of it that way [ don't think right maybe ] ~ that the image tag must be there for that to happen, so SCCP must be generating them based on my image titles ~ which I have been very specific with.

Since I have over 500 pages and only 211 have been indexed, maybe it threw off that company's evaluation of the site. The company was a directory that also does sell SEO services and they had linked to me.

That clears up a lot. I will be patient with my site and double check this thread with support and confirm for future reference.

Thanks for all the thoughts!

It is not my job to ask someone if they know code. I am not going to sit and ask each person if they know code. It would take too long.

All my answers will include a CODE based answer. I am a coder.

Just like your answers do not include code.

I do not assume something does not know something. And frankly I believe it better to have more options then just one.
