Sorry Bob...didn't mean to ignore that point and hadn't really noticed that no answer had been produced for you.
I used a template for this site http://www.jayetra.com/shop/index.php which has left hand navigation and the items show up in the cart as they are added. Try it out for yourself. The only thing is I can't quite remember which template I used. I certainly had to do a bit of tweaking and experimentation to get what I wanted...and it links in to a normal page as home page which is obviously also hosted on my server. I'm afraid the site is a bit of a mess right now as I haven't updated it in a long while...but you can get the idea.
Maybe someone else recognizes the template...

Sorry I didn't get back for so long! The theme I use called Clean Slate - left navigation.
