Categories not showing up on...

I have been finding that some categories do NOT show up on the categories page. They DO all show up when you hover the mouse over categories on the left navigation menu, but not on the categories page.
I have discovered that making at least one item in the category a "featured item" will correct the problem, the category will then show up!

For the categories page,
I have checked "Show category names" and "Show Sub Categories".
I have unchecked "Show Products".

I discovered that I needed to add an image to the category itself for things to show up.
To do this, highlight the category bar and when you see it orange, go directly to the product details tab. Enter into the product details and add an illustrative generic image for that particular category, and if you wish you can also write in a few details about the category and sub-categories if you have them.
If you have sub-categories, do the same for each sub-category.
Hope that helps.
You can see my categories up and working here:

Hope that helps

Hiya Janys,

Do you have to do that even if you don't plan for the images to show at all? I haven't added any images for the categories myself yet either, but I wasn't really sure if I was going to have them show or not, and right now it's turned off to show the images... I think ... lol

Jo Ann,
Re-reading my post, I realise I should have added more there... Yankee is right. Unless a product has been added, a category will not show up. However, I have not been able to replicate this problem with the settings Yankee has used.
I still get the name of the category showing up in the menu and on the category page even without the featured products or illustrative image I mentioned earlier.
I must reiterate that I have at least one product included in the category to make it show up.

Yeah Yankee's problem is the same issue I'm having also with both the basic and the pro versions of SCC. Unless I have a product set as a Featured product that category will not show up. I haven't loaded the program tonight to see if adding images makes any difference, but so for on my site and my test site for Pro I have lots of categories not showing up on the categories page (list they show up on for the menu no problem there) because I don't have a featured product in them all. I use my featured product as my sale items so I don't want something in every category marked as featured. I don't think it should need to be, and I'm pretty sure this wasn't an issue till we upgraded to the 3.8 versions. Just not sure where or why though.

I guess the best way to know for sure if it's doing the same to you Janys would be to remove the featured item(s) from one of your categories and see if it shows up on the categories page or not then. I'm pretty sure it won't show up though, but then we'd have more collaboration that it's universal :)

I have just been trying to do that but the program won't save for upload right now. I have attempted about 5 times and still no go. Can't see why that has suddenly baulked on me.

++++++++++

Managed to see the page in preview.
I have checked all options on the category page set up
ie
see category
see sub-category
see products

I have not added a separate image for the category name
I have added one, non-featured product
I can see the category name and the one product I have added

In conclusion, I do not seem to be able to replicate the problem both of you describe.

++++++++
Sounds as if you both need the support team for this one.

I am a few builds behind as everything is working well and I don't wish for this change, so I'm not sure if it's a new build issue. :)

I have all my categories showing, and I don't have featured items from a few of them. I do have products & images in all categories though. So it would appear that maybe it's more to do with no products in the category??

I thought I would reply with how the cart is working for me to see if you guys can trouble shoot the reason.

Bren. You did well to drop by. The more people who can describe their own experience the better. However, if you can manage to upgrade then your testimonial will obviously be more relevant to any issues which are occurring currently with the SCC Pro. The changeover issues are minimal now that the development of the program is so advanced, and I have to say many of those I found were to put down to my own misinterpretation or lack of knowledge. As far as I am concerned, I have now - with a little help here and there - managed to resolve them all.

I was aware that empty categories do not show up, and that is fine.

A photo and description text will not make a category show up. Only if the category contains at least one featured item. Like Jo Ann, I also want to have only a few featured items, and not one from every category.

I am still having a hard time understanding this. Please look at this test shop:
http://coffeecup-iis7.com/shop/category.php

The category "Dance Floor" and "Concessions" have no products in them but they do show on the page.

A small point of clarification: If you add a category and have not put any products into it (or sub category), the category will not display. We think that is logical because if you don't have a product in there, why display it at all?

Maybe we are just not understanding the need for such a feature. Can we get some comments as to why you would want to have an empty category inside of your shop?

There is a bug where empty categories are appearing in the navigation when they should not be. We will correct that problem shortly.
