Hi - I downloaded the trial for Shopping Cart to see if I would like it. I tried uploading and could not see the site. I emailed my host and they said they are not sure I can have a cart. Has anyone ever run into this problem? I use a private company to host it with unlimited space - so I was surprised to get this response. I just assumed I could do this. Wondering if I have to find another hosting company.

That indeed is a very strange reply to get from a hosting provider. If you have a website, you can definitely have a shop. The only thing you need to make sure is that your provider meets the minimum server requirements.
