Use of image backgrounds in the HTML...

I've had RLMP for a couple of weeks, so I'm fairly new.
The program generated a good layout. I incorporated a container at one point, with the intention of editing the output HTML, to put in an image with superimposed text (which I need for the target design).
I would expect to do this by including the image as background in CSS, and then simply adding the text. However this doesn't seem to work in the code exported from RLMP.
I checked my code, it works fine in a blank HTML page; it just doesn't work in the exported RLMP code.
I can't find any examples of image/text overlap in the RLMP manuals.
Anyone have any tips? Is 'container' the right element to use for this purpose?
