Is it possible to constrain the max...

When I open an email produced by RED it seems to have a scrollbar along the bottom of an Outlook client until the window stretches across a screen and a half of two widescreen monitors!

Is it possible to have a max width of anything around 600 or 800 pixels?

How do we do this or what do you recommend?

Thanks

Hi Daniel,
Have you checked your email in RED as you should be able to set the email styling so it looks good down to a very small view port but still fills the port it's viewed in 100% thus not forcing any overflow. Can you share your .red file?
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

Hi Eric,

Many thanks for taking a look.

I made a similar email last year that worked well.
This year, the tests did not open correctly on Gmail.com accounts.

So I started playing and...
I fear the elements at the top are in a mess. Not sure how it happened.
Not sure how to make them right.

I was importing this into Outlook and it looked fine (I use a HTML import macro).
Whatever has changed now causes the top items to be wrong length (too short) a few of them come out on one line rather than take a line each.
The paragraphs have lines that span two monitors rather than wrap!

While it was sitting well yesterday, my efforts today have not made it any better.

Anyway! :)
Here attached is my RED file in its current state!

Take a look at your columns. You have several with really high min heights.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

Thanks Eric,

I know when you say a little you always mean a lot! :)

I can select Columns, but where do I see the setting for minimum height?

I am using RED Personal Mailer Edition and see only number of Spans in Columns and number of pixels for Width in Grid.
Is there a height setting somewhere too?

I have the business version.
I'm setting the min height by selecting a column on the page then clicking the Design tab.
I'm wondering how the min heights got that big. They are over 6000 px.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

Thanks Eric,

In my version, Column: Design Tab, I only have padding settings.
I don't see the min height settings at all.
So I would not have been able to change these settings myself.

Some of the problems I am having are only noticed at import into Outlook.
There is something weird there that was not happening a year ago.

So, since the output of RED is fine when viewed as served from a web server, I can assume the issues are more in Outlook than RED. So I moved to MailChimp and did a test run there. The test was perfect, the deliverable was as intended, matched the view of the served HTML email.
I felt confident enough to send it out to the entire email list. I included myself in the recipient list.
When I opened it (in Outlook), the display was as weird as when it is imported into Outlook (not the same as the test).

So there is something a little strange. I'm not sure if the strangeness is in RED or Outlook.
But I can only imagine that users who receive a HTML email in Outlook, may see it differently to others.

The strange thing is that emails from CoffeeCup seem to open fine in Outlook, always.

The only question I have from all of this is:
If the email is set to an explicit width, let's say 600 px
Will a single column design with 12 spans appear the same as a single column design with 6 spans.
Should we use the Span settings to control the width for single column designs?

I hope to do more testing.
But I think something more in the help files is needed to make it clear how to control the max width of an email.

It all depends on content. I'm sorry I don't have your version. Hopefully after a little messing around you'll be able to get it.
