A Few RED Questions

First off, this program is killer. Been using the Form Builder for years, and this was exactly what I needed to step up our email game. Had a few questions was hoping someone else could help out with:

1. I'm looking to see if anyone else has found a way to make image links within RED open in a new tab/window? Links put on text allow you to target="_blank", self, etc. But buttons, images, text links, etc. don't allow for that option. Am I missing it? I can obviously just edit the export HTML, but that's not fun at all and defeats the purpose of RED.

2. On the topic of exporting HTML, what are the chances if getting the HTML *NOT* be minified by default? Sometimes I want to comb through it quickly and the minified single-line code makes that a nightmare.

3. Also, I'm really interested in adding some subtle keyframes animations to my hero spots. Hope we can inject some css of our own to the mix eventually (obviously with the warning it might break on some grouchy *cough* Outlook *cough* clients. Any chance of seeing this someday?

Hi JB,

1. By default all links open in a new window. Remember you are sending this as an email and not a browser window.

2. You should never try and modify the code. If you do you run the risk of breaking it. Coffeecup has spent a lot of time on the markup to work on many different email clients, changing the code after exported is not recommended.

3. This question I will leave to the developers. I'm not sure how easy that would be to do, however more design control is always nice.

JB, you could always experiment on your own to see what works.
Try adding another <style> section in the <head> after the other RED styles.

Totally on board with you regarding how links always open in new windows. I guess I just phrased my question incorrectly. When we do blasts, we always include a 'view email online' or 'view in browser' option. What I meant for new tabs/windows was referring to the actual page we host it on, which happens to share the same HTML (If time wasn't an issue we'd probably not do this, but RED's code is so very friendly it's hard to not want to!).

Sometimes we'd prefer it not take users away from the blast entirely and instead open in a new tab. Right now, not finding a way to do that with the images aside from finding each href in the export HTML and adding a target. It's really not RED's job, but would be a wonderful quality of life thing to have that control on images, since most other elements allow it.

@paintbrush: Thanks! Will totally check that out. We've already tried a few things with .GIFs we include as our headers, will report back if we have any success with animations. I agree w/ @Steve, though; I'm sure it will be very cool on certain clients, and soul-crushingly awful on others.

Thanks for the questions and comments everybody. It helps us learn how people use RED and what the wishes are, eventually leading to a better Email Designer. As to the specific items:

1. We discussed the option to also generate a stand alone page (with slightly different markup). This will probably not be added short term but it is an interesting use case and something we will probably come back to.

2. There are all types of un-minifiers out there. However, if this is a broadly supported request, it will very likely make it into the app some day.

3. We have a few ideas for advanced elements but as paintbrush points out, gifs have the broadest support at the moment.

Hi there,

First off - what a fantastic tool! I used to code years ago but gave up once it all got too complicated so I could focus on design - and of course now I need to get involved in code again but this tool is a life-saver (and massive time-saver!).

I'd like to second the motion of an optional un-minified code - I run some emails through Campaign Monitor so need to tweak code accordingly to add their tags in - unless, of course, a partnership with them in the future would make this even easier...!

But, that is my only minor gripe - RED really has been a game changer for me, so thank you!

That's great to hear Sam!

We expect two things to happen:
1. We will include the tags for the most popular EMSPs so they can be inserted by simply clicking. We'll also provide an option to add custom tags. The time frame for these features is end of April / mid May.
2. We will integrate... But discussions are ongoing with several of them, and we currently have no time frame.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
