I know it has been asked before, but I cant see a simple answer.

I would like to display a different image on the mouseover, and revert to the original on mouseout.

Can this be done?

Wouldn't an image change on a mouseover for an image map be counter productive. The linked locations wouldn't change with the image so it might confuse users.

What I'm actually trying to do is to highlight the mouseover area.

What I was going to do is create an image of only the cropped mouseover area, and make that a bit larger, so that it 'pops out' to the user.

I have a number of linked areas on the overall map.

The linked locations wouldn't change.

I would take a look at CSS Sprites as altering the image map would be a big job to achieve what you want.
