HTML Editor 2008 - Find/Replace not...

When selecting "Look in Folder" in the find/replace dialog box, CC only replaces a few occurences of the string. For a test, I tried to replace <head> with <head>. It found 6 occurences. I clicked "Replace" again and it found zero. I clicked "Replace again and it found 4. (I have 300+ html pages in the directory.)

Find/replace worked fine before I installed HTML Editor 2006. At that time I looked in the forums and found several other people with the same problem. The only responses seemed to question the intelligence of the posters, so I didn't pursue it then. But now I've installed 2008 and still have the problem. As a matter of fact, I haven't even editted a page with 2008, yet. I installed it, then tried find/replace with the results above.

This just in....the problem seems to be in the Find portion. I just did a Find on <head> and it only found it in 6 of the 300+ pages.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Dave,
Please don't think that I am 'questionning the intelligence of the poster' if I go over some basics just to make sure you have followed all the steps.

In the find or find/replace for CC editor;
1- did you select *.* for types of files?

The default is only to search .htm and .html pages. I have loads of .php pages that won't get searched unless I tell the program to include them.

2 - Did you checkmark the 'search subfolders' checkbox?
The default is to only search the folder you select, without looking in the sub-folders, so they get skipped.

I did a search for <head> and only found 6 for one of my sites. I then selected *.* for file types, and got 55 (my php pages). Then I checkmarked the search sub-folders and got all 955 without any trouble ( took a minute or so for all of them to be found)

Maybe you have taken all of these steps, or maybe the CC editor changed something with search since 2006 and you have been missing a step, and that's why I listed the options.

If you have taken all of these steps, and still not got the results you need, then please submit a support ticket with CoffeeCup help so that they can look into it. They do check on the forums, but logging into your account and creating a support ticket is sometimes the best route to take.

Good Luck

Thanks for your response, Cliff.

1. All of the 300+ pages are either .htm or .html, so I leave the file type set to the default of only searching .htm and .html pages.

2. I usually don't check the "include subfolders" check box, because all of the files are in one folder. I do have a 'backup' subfolder and, if I check the "include subfolders" box, it will find 20 or 30 occurences in the subfolder (even though it should find 300+ there, too).

I had used find/replace for years with no problem. Then it suddenly quit being reliable. I find it very telling that I can leave the same search term in the "find" box, repeatedly click "find" and get different results each time.

just for laughs, can you try the *.* all files just to see? Might not help, but what have you got to loose? Maybe it's just a glitch, and if it is, then we can report it to CoffeeCup and get it fixed. Did you submit a support ticket?
The latest version is buid 233, under help/about this software.

Eureka!

I renamed the original Mainfolder to Oldfolder and was warned that this folder was 'shared' on my home network. I said 'ignore'. Then I created a new Mainfolder and moved everything from Oldfolder to Mainfolder. I did a Find on <head> and it found all 300+ occurences.

I don't know if the sharing was the problem or if there was something else going on with that folder. I've been using the same folder for 5 or 6 years.

Anyway, it works for now. I'll worry about the sharing later.

Now I have to ask, are you on Vista, and did you import or copy/paste that folder onto your Vista machine?
I ask because it sounds like a Vista compatability files error, where vista sometimes thinks that a folder of program is old, and makes a "virtual" folder for stuff. Have a look near the top,(when that old folder is opened) on the toolbar to seee if beside file, edit or whatever if there is a 'compatability files' heading. If there is, then that was the issue, and copying the contents to a new folder usually sorts it out. If not, then it's one of those unexplained things that computers do sometimes.

Either way, glad you got it working properly
