I'm running Windows xp.

Hi I have just completed working on a website for a friends hockey team and gave the whole website (on usb key) to that friend to put on her computer. We put it in the same working folder in the html editor and she has all the files needed to update the site. Her computer is running Windows Vista. I created one page that contained Player profiles and each profile was created using Microsoft Word. I saved it as both a .doc and also as a webpage so that if she needed to update the profile she could just open it in word and change whatever she needed to change and then save it the same way as I did before.
She went in to update the word document and when she went to re-save it, it said it was a "read only" file and did she want to make a copy? I did exactly the same steps as her and I was able to update the word doc and re-save as a word doc as well as a webpage. The same thing is happening with a calendar I created in excel. Is the problem something to do with her computer running Windows Vista or could it be something else? We looked to see if in the properties of the document had the read-only bock checked off and it didn't so I am stumped and would appreciate anyones suggestions. Thank you in advance.

Most likely it has to do with the flash drive, then saving it to a different operating system. I would think that using Word, open the file from the flash drive, save it to the Vista computer. Close Word, open the file using word and make a small change. See if it will save, since it has already been saved using Word on Vista.
If you just copy/paste the file onto the Vista machine, it might not think that Vista owns the file, so it could be one of those User Account Control something something something....click accept....are you sure you are you and that you wanted to so something....Vista issues. (Vista joke, nm if you don't get it.)

Laurie, how did your friend go in to edit the word document? Did she try to update it online, or did she edit it locally?

Hi Cliff
Thank you for your advice I will get her to try that first. Ya I can believe how much more she has to click to open anything on Vista. The commercial really is a true take on vista vs mac.

Hi Inger
She did the edit locally, not online. Basically gave her the file on the key with all the folders and we sat side by side and I was showing her how to edit a word doc and also a excel file and when I hit save, it was fine on my computer but when she hit save it said it was a read-only do you want to make a copy came up.

We aren't even live yet with the site.
