Default Folders in HTML Editor - Post...

I have read the Help PDF 'Working With Website Projects'.

I am still unclear about the term Working Folder. Is it the intention that this folder should be within the Website Project - or is it something different ? Basically, what is the Working Folder?

In Tools > Preferences > Folders there are default settings for 5 folders. Can someone suggest a recommended structure or is it possible to reset the paths to 'factory defaults' (this may then give me a clue).

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Peter.

Hello

Well, I am not the greatest html person thats for sure, but so far as I have learned, the default working folder is the top most folder on the site. It contains all your other folders which are subdirectories of IT!...

In my case its named 'htdocs'.... And all other folders on my site are sub directories of this one....

The default working folder is 'invisible' in normal operation...................

My site for example can be accessed by typing www.manxmaniac.co.uk/index.php or even just www.manxmaniac.co.uk

This index.php file is in the 'htdocs' folder.... And as such.... This default working folder doesnt have to be in the path string to run the files it contains.....

Well.... that's my take on it anyway, and I am sorry if I have got it all wrong, as I frequently do......:)

I hope it may help though

Regards

Peter (both of you),

You can specify a 'working folder' on your machine where all your websites appear as subfolders. Since I don't use the web projects, I have a folder in My Documents that I have named 'html'. Inside the html folder, I have folders for each website I am/have been involved in.

This html folder is my working folder. I have set it so in the preferences. I have set the same folder as 'working' for images, background images, sounds, css and whatsnot, because from the html folder I always have to navigate into whichever site's folder system that I need to work with. Since I don't use Projects, I am very careful copying the resources I need into the 'images, 'sounds' etc subfolders for each site.

This is the way I've been working since 1996, and it has never been a problem. I'm not saying that everybody else do it the same way, and I'm not saying that you have to do it my way... ;)

Of course, If you do use projects, you can also select the project folder as 'working', that is completely up to you.
Ha en riktig god dag!

Inger

That's....... ACE!

I think I maybe on the right track, just in a different time zone

Your description sounds as though the default working folder is the same thing,
similar at least, either in a website project or uploaded to the internet.

Thanks for that detail, I have taken something new onboard....

For me my project folder knows it's actually the root of the site. Everything in it will be at the root when published. Folders inside the project folder are sub directory's of the main domain. I use the projects setup especially for mixing VSD with the html editor. your project folder can be named anything you want as it has no affect on the outcome of the site structure.:)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
