I recently upgraded from 6.2, which had the option of increasing the connection-timeout period. I can't find that feature anywhere in 6.6, and one of my websites - which always takes longer to connect - is timing-out before connecting with Direct FTP.

That option has actually not been in the software for 2-3 years and you were upgrading from a very old version. Right now we default the connection time to 30 seconds, so if you hosting provider is taking longer then that to connect, something else is probably going wrong.

Try is checking the box "Passive mode" and see if that helps with the connection time.
