I just installed Coffee Cup FRee FTP 4.0 build 1 under XP Pro SP3 as admin. It started fine the first time launched and could connect to a site but now it is ill. When I double click the desktop icon, the splash screen comes up, then a message window on top asking 'Please enter password for this server' without identifying the server then within three seconds of the message window appearing both the message window and the splash screen disappear without starting the application. Any ideas to fix this? Thanks

This morning after I started up my computer I logged in as a user with admin privileges (but not the admin account). As that user I get a different failure from Coffee Cup Free FTP. I don't get the splash screen at all, but instead I get an error message window titled Coffee Cup Direct FTP that contains the message "Sorry license has expired or is invalid'. I thought this was a free application that didn't require a license.

The only additional bit of information I can provide is that I also have Coffee Cup HTML Editor 2008 (licensed, not a trial) also installed. Could that be causing a conflict?

You need to run the software in the admin account as it was installed. If you do not, you will get that error message.

Hi Scott -
When I login as Administrator (as I installed the software) I get the effect I described in my first post: When I double click the desktop icon, the splash screen comes up, then a message window on top asking 'Please enter password for this server' without identifying the server then within three seconds of the message window appearing both the message window and the splash screen disappear without starting the application.

Hi Hugh,
I have XP SP3 and just installed free ftp 4 build one and have no problems connecting and no password required, Are you sharing that comp, is the program installed in the default drive (C) When I right click on the desktop shortcut I have the radio button selected "run as " current user- does that work.
Have you tried unistalling and restarting and reinstalling?

Hi Bruzer -
I don't share the computer. There is just an Administrator account and my normal login account (that also has admin privileges). Program is installed to default c:\Program Files. My desktop shortcut is configured the same as yours - 'run as current user.'

As you suggested I uninstalled, restarted, and reinstalled (as Administrator) and I get the same failure after double-clicking the free ftp icon (when logged in as Administrator) - the splash screen comes up, then a message window on top asking 'Please enter password for this server' without identifying the server then within three seconds of the message window appearing both the message window and the splash screen disappear without starting the application. There is a screen shot here I managed to get with Snagit: http:\\metaterrainian.com\temp\ccupfree_ftp.jpg ( I also tried to attach it to this message)

The only other thing to mention is that during the install I get a message window from the installer "We are going to uninstall all previous beta versions. Please wait. OK? I of course choose OK because that is the only way forward.

i Hugh,
firewall-ant-virus-all these disabled?
Security settings- when you go to control panel and go to firewall, in the exceptions try adding direct ftp-worth a try.
Have you tried another ftp like filezilla-direct ftp-wise ftp etc;
here's what I have http://www.kellyinfo.com/web/firewall.avi
I'll see what I can do to get this to happen on my side.
Hugh if that doesn't work, I have some thing you can try with settings.
email me.

Hi Bruzer -
Thanks for the .avi - very good to demonstrate your instructions. I turned off Windows firewall then added Coffee Cup Free FTP to exception list. That did not help any - got same action as described in first post. You indicated to add direct-ftp to the exception list but that is not a program that comes up as available to add.

In the meantime I have tried out Core FTP LE and Filezilla - both of which worked fine. My goal here was to evaluate a few free FTP clients so I could recommend one for my father in law. I am going to steer him to Core FTP. I have no doubt that Coffee Cup Free FTP works on some systems but it does not work on mine in spite of reasonable efforts so I can hardly recommend it.

Thanks for the screen shot. That password is not for a server, but for your local computer. At one time you may have installed Direct FTP or Shopping Cart Creator and opted to password protect your servers locally. To fix this, delete the Sharedsettings.ccs file at C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data
