Direct FTP with godaddy

I searched the forum but didn't find anything new from what I found in the help menu of VSD or godaddy. I keep trying to connect and keep getting an error message about it being a private system and me not being logged in.
I am (attempting to) set it up like this:
server name: my domain name. I have tried it without the www, with, and also with the http, all with the same results
user name and password: as I sign in at godaddy and have retyped to check for accuracy.

Am I missing something? Previously I had been using the free ftp provided by godaddy, but that is painstaking for several pages.
Thanks!
Heather

VSD should read direct ftp, clearly I didn't proofread before I posted.

This is a shot in the dark, but have you tried using "ftp.yourdomain.com" as the server address?

Have you tried using passive mode?

domain.com
user
pass

this is how Godaddy is usually set up.Sometimes selecting the passive mode works wonders.Click on Servers (6.0 version) check passive. Please let us know
