Hi,

I have added 3 links to one of the pages of my website. They are links to download pdf documents. When I did this in VSD and previewed the page everything appeared to work fine. Then I went into Direct FTP to replace the relevant page on the server and it seemed to upload ok. But then when I browsed to the page and click on the links the pdfs don't work and I get 'the page cannot be found'.

I'm really not sure what I've done wrong... Can you help please?

I've had a closer look and have some more information....

When I highlight the text for the link and then click on the 'link' tool I find the relevant pdf on my computer and select it. When I've completed all this for the 3 documents/links I get a message box come up which tells me that to properly embed html code I have to go the settings > additional files > add files.

I don't know what all this means :(

Are you sure the pdf files were uploaded, and are in the exact place on the server the links are pointing to?

Ian
when you link to a file locally in VSD, that file should be added automatically an placed into the download folder in your files folder when uploaded. The error you see seems to point to an embedded file you placed on your page for viewing in which case you would have to go to add files in the settings option and add that pdf.

Thanks for the advice. Idiot! I didn't upload the pdf files.....

Anyway, I used Direct FTP to upload the pdf files to my server. But (in VSD) how do I make the link point to these files? When I click on the link tool it lets me browse my local drive but not the files on the server....

I tried to use the add files in the settings options and selected the documents but it didn't seem to automatically upload them.

Thanks again.

I believe when you add files in VSD it uploads them to a "files" folder under the main one. Did you look in there?

For linking I would just type in the URL to the document. If it's uploaded into the "files" folder then your link would just be:

/files/document_name.pdf

Actually, come to think of it, I think the files folder only contains stuff you embed into web pages, like images and graphic buttons and the like. The stuff you "add files" might just get put in the root folder. I don't have VSD available here to check.

Thanks again Spinny.

You are right about the files folder under the main one. I have uploaded the documents into this files folder using CC Direct FTP.

In VSD I have typed in the URL to the document.

But.... I still have this message box appear in VSD telling me to properly embed the documents using settings>additonal files>add files.

When I have done this step also I don't see how the files are being uploaded? Do I have to manually click 'upload' in VSD.

It all seems logical and I'm clearly missing something here. :/

The files you add are uploaded when (if) you publish (upload) the whole site using the built-in FTP function of VSD. If you're uploading your pages manually using another FTP client then it won't work, you have to upload them yourself along with the web pages.

Even when using an external ftp, when the project is saved it's located in the download folder in the files folder, so yes it will still be or should be added automatically with out using the add files unless it is pasted/embedded onto a page.
