Zoom and text box overlap - Page 1

Due to a moment of inattention I posted this over in the HTML Editor sector. Here it is again:

I have a simple text box filled site. On my XP computer it shows OK. On my Vista the text inside some of the boxes line breaks oddly.

Plus on both computers, if I zoom in and out with Crtl +, and Crtl - the boxes break oddly and sometimes overlap. Then if the zoom is repeated at a smaller (or larger) size the overlap if different.

Try it raputtak.com Click on the Atheism link for another example. Then hit Ctrl + a few times (and/or Ctrl -)

I'd rather not prohibit zoom as some readers might need the larger type.

Any suggestions?

thanks for reposting, I deleted the other thread for you, good luck on the issue as I don't use VSD.

That is actually one of the disadvantage of having to put text in boxes. That way text can't expand when enlarged.
You'll have to experiment with making the text boxes wider/taller than what you actually need for the text. Start with a medium size text and enlarge it up to three times and see how the boxes fit. Make them larger if they don't fit.

text can't expand when enlarged

Not sure I see what you mean, Inger. When I click Ctrl + the text expands to a larger font size quite nicely.

Putting a superfluous blank line at the end of the text box helps a bit.

What is weird is that if you expand my raputtak.com home page, the com of dot com sometimes goes to a second line and sometimes comes back as you continue to expand it.

OK. I just checked on the lap top. It still has serious overlap discrepancies that do not change with expansion.

What does this span code do?

<div class="Object216"><span class="textstyle0">Raputtak</span><span class="textstyle1"> Dot Com<br>

</span></div>

Looks like it divides up where I make the text different sizes. Is that what is messing it up?

The <span> tag has nothing to do with expansion. It's just a css tag to use for block elements.

When I say the 'text can't expand when enlarged' I mean it can't enlarge the box that it is inside. The box dimensions limits how a text will be displayed. If the width is not enough any more due to scaling, it will cause line breaks. I think the height of a box will expand, though and thus collide with any other elements below it.

This isn't a bug and not much we can really do about that. That is just how it will work when you zoom. You will find that same problem on many sites that don't even use VSD.

For me using IE8 I zoomed in and out as far as I could and the text didn't change at all. So maybe a local issue with screen resolution???
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

I wish I had not mentioned zoom as it really has nothing to do with it.

Are you saying that text boxes will overlap willy nilly and there is nothing I can do about it? Other than include vast amounts of blank space between the boxes.

Scott, I would like to see a non-VSD site with this problem.

Eric, to what values is your screen resolution set? On this laptop I see the overlap in IE. The laptop is new, just as it came from Acer.

We can only go by what you write. ;)

Anytime I have seen text boxes overlap is because the text was added in an incorrect way. I posted an article here a few weeks ago which describes how to add text to your page. I guarantee that if you closely examine your page, you will find some of these errors.
