Why does VSD increase the size of...

Does anyone know why VSD increases the size of an image when it stores it in mywebsite_website/files? I can give some examples below (all in kb):

My pictures -----VSD files
5.5 ---------------------9.4
13.5-------------------- 23
30 ---------------------40
14.5 ------------------25.5
13.1 -------------------28
23.3 -------------------30.5

All of these images had previously been resized in photoshop then i used "Save for web" to save them as either JPG high quality or JPG medium quality. I had been expecting them to be the same size in .../files as they are in My Pictures.

The numbers you are referring, are they file sizes in KB?

I can't help with any explanation, other than perhaps that VSD may be adding some information to the images. But don't take my word for it, it's really just a guess.

Is it by any chance referring to an image with a small background or frame.

I have a feeling I have seen this in instances when i have placed an image on a small background to make it look like a picture frame /

Hi Inger & Viv,

yes, all the numbers are in KB

They are all straightforward photos with no frames.

I just checked some of my images and they're all the same size as the 'saved for web' files. The only ones that are different are some that I've re-sized within VSD.
Do any of your images have drop-shadows, or have they been copy/pasted to another location? If you post a link to the site, maybe someone can figure out what's causing the increase :)

Hi Paintbrush,

All the images were simply inserted on the page then moved around a bit. They were already sized properly. There was no use of drop shadows and they have not been copied and pasted.

One rather striking example is an image which, for test purposes, I have "saved for web" as JPG high, JPG med and JPG low. Although there was a wide variation in the saved sizes, all 3 VSD sizes were almost the same.
Low 13kb became 28kb
Med 17kb became 29kb
High 23kb became 30kb

But the point is that I am not just picking out problem cases here. The VSD size is always bigger than the size in My Pictures when i have used "save for web" as JPG high, low or med.

On the other hand, if I simply "save" at maximum quality, the reverse is true ie the VSD size is actually smaller than the My Pics size. But this is not an issue as i would never save at that quality.

Very curious. I wonder if anyone else has come across this... At least your images aren't overly bloated by whatever process is going on :)

http://johntest.coffeecup.com/ is the website to which I was referring in the initial post. It is purely a test site at the moment.

I am aiming to attach a Zip file containing some of the original images which were inserted. They are from pages Home, Introductory, Other Scottish Groups and Newsletters

I hope that is useful

I only looked at the lotus picture, but for that one the website version is larger (6.5x9 cm) than the original in the zip file (6.2x8.7 cm). The pixel sizes are identical (244x342), so the size change is associated with a change in resolution from 100 dpi to 96 dpi.
Since the pixel sizes are the same, it seems that the difference in file size would have to be caused by a difference in the rate of JPEG compression between the two versions.
I don't use VSD myself, so I don't know if the program always changes images to 96 dpi...
