Why do I need "internal links"...

Sorry if this question is so basic (I'm a newB at this stuff), but I do not understand why I need to hassle around trying to insert links to go from one page to another in my website - it is only three pages. Instructions in VSD Help P79 coaches me (unclearly) how to put a link from P2 to P1 - so then do I need another on P1 to go to P2? How about P3? I have looked at the "Knowledge Articles" and with an average rating of "2" they are not of much help. Do these links eventually result in being able to scroll when the website is published? The hours I have spent...

Hiya Neptune,

Are you adding a menu to your site? If so then you don't need links in general, just links added to the menu so the menu can navigate between your pages. If you're not adding a menu then just adding a line of links at the top of your site will allow people to navigate, and yes you'd need them on each page so people can get from page to page, otherwise there would be no way for them to get to the other pages of your site. Not sure what you are talking about with scrolling.

Unlike an document produced in say, Microsoft Word, HTML documents are primarily intended for a viewing screen instead of a printed page, so they don't have page breaks - documents can be as long as you want to make them.

A monitor can only display a certain number of lines depending on the actual monitor and the size of the window the page is being viewed in, a page longer than the size of the window will cause the browser to produce scrolling bars.

One use of internal links is to allow readers to find something on a long page without scrolling up & down searching for it, like on my FAQ page http://www.drivingnt.com/faq.html.
The menu with external links at the top takes the visitor to different pages which are on different driver training topics, the boxes of internal links at the top of the page take the visitor to various spots within the same page, which are all on FAQs.

If you split your content up into several pages (advisable for a long document or for varying topics), links between pages are needed because a visitor is usually sent to the main page (home page) first, if there are no links they won't even know the other pages exist, or a have a way of getting to them.

I hope that helps (I had to do it in a hurry, it's time to get the ironing from my non-existent wife and go out on the roads with learner drivers to terrorise other motorists).

Did you just repost this again Zipper? Or do we have a forum anomaly? I have seen a few posts over the past few days that have had people look like they are actually reposting at a later time, but maybe they did lol, lemme know if this was a glitch and we'll see that it's removed :)

I edited post number one, but it duplicated instead of updating so the first post can be deleted thanks.
I think I might have tried to update right at the point where the forum software had timed out and was going into lockout mode.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
