I have not downloaded vsd 2008 yet...but is there any way to make changes to all pages in teh 2008 version.

For example I have a 60 page website and I want to put an add on the same spot on all 60 pages can I just make the cahnge one time and have it appear on all pages or do I have to go through and do it to all of them?

Hi Eric,
As far as I know you have to do it on each page. You do it on the first page and then copy it and paste it one page at a time on the rest of your pages.
Hope this helps!

Eric, are you referring to HTML Editor 2008 or VSD (2 different apps)? I'm assuming HTML Editor. Sharon's idea works well in VSD, not so sure about HTML Editor 2008. In either app, I personally, don't know how else you could apply the changes to all w/o having to load/edit each page.

I am talking about vsd. A friend just made me a website with another brand of design software. On the site she made it had a 'template' and all the other pages. Any changes to the template effected all of the pages...so changing an ad on a 60 page web site would take 30 sec apposesed to 1.5 hours. No one wants to copy and past every page on a big site.

I am looking for a solution to create and work with bigger sites. Anything over 15 pages gets crazy with VSD.

Eric,

What you want to do is very easy with the HTML Editor. There are a couple of different ways of making a change to the text that shows on each page, that could also be applied to the graphics. One method for those hosted on a Linux server, and the other method for those hosted on a Windows server.

Now that I think about it, you could use the HTML tools with VSD to add the necessary code to each page, then make the changes to the single file called by that code.

Do you know what type server you have hosting your web site?

If you have PHP installed on your hosting server, you can use PHP includes. On a Windows server, I think you use ASP.

Check with your hosting service, and find out if you need to use PHP or ASP. Then let us know, and we can give you the code you need to use.

As an example, I use PHP includes for the head area code that is constant and is used on every page. I use PHP includes for the footers that are on every page. Since I have a PHP include calling the constant head section code, every page has a link to my main CSS page. These bits of code allow me to change the footer a single time, and every page reflects that change, and I can make a change to my main CSS file, and every page reflects that single change in style.

Is this something you want to use? If so, what is your server information? What things do you want to be able to adjust site wide?

In the example you suggested, if you have an ad section on your site, and that ad is on every page, this would work for you.

Bill,
It's been 3 years since you answered Eric's question. As a new user I'm having a similar issue but for me it's more about having a standard header/menu bar and footer on every page. Has VSD developed an easier way to do this? Is the embedded HTML solution still the best way to solve the problem? (Seems dumb because I can't see the text.)

How can I learn more?

Snow man, In VSD create a page that has all the elements on it that you know you want on every page. Now save this as your master or standard page. Now every time you add a page to your site check the "Duplicate Page" box on the new page settings dialog box then select your master or standard page from the drop down at the bottom.:)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

Rolly,
I may be wrong but I don't see how your suggestion will fix my problem. After copying/duplicating every page must still be edited individually. While I don't have a complex site (see lynnministries.org), it will be getting more complex over time. Many pages will have identical graphics, menus and links. (For now, all pages look the same but down the road they may fall into one or more similar groups.)

The real problem is, what if I want to change the text of "Contact" to "Contact Us" or I want to add a new link. I need to make that change on every page to update the whole site. That's why the current template approach really isn't a valid template or master, it's just a jump start into page-by-page editing.

Am I misunderstanding something? Can/will VSD do this? Is there a not-too-ugly workaround or do I need to start shopping for another progam? :(

Thanks,
JS
