VSD syncing feature doesn't seem to...
I have been using VSD for a couple years now for my personal web sites. Knowing how amazing this software is, I wanted to set up our work software with VSD.
I went ahead and designed a web site for the place I work and uploaded it to the server. I designed it at home since I already owned VSD. Tonight I downloaded the VSD demo onto the computer at work so that I could make some modifications (we are planning to buy VSD for the work computer, but just haven't gotten around to it yet).
The problem is, when I used VSD's syncing feature to get the web site downloaded onto this computer, I ended up overwriting the web site with a blank file! Ouch! And now I can't fix it until I get home, which means several hours with no web site.
Why isn't VSD's syncing feature working? What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,
Jason

Oh - just read the posting guidelines. To answer some other questions - my home computer is running Windows XP. Not sure what version of VSD it is running since I am not there to look. The computer at work is running Windows 2000 with the trial version of VSD.
I tried to restore the work web site by going into the server and trying to restore the old files, but they were overwritten with blank ones. I will have to re-upload from home.

jason,
The resync feature is to resync the site with the computer that uploaded everything. It is a way to allow VSD to make sure the site and its files are in sync.
There is no way to download a website and edit it with VSD.
When you build a website using VSD, a special file is created. Your_site.vnu is on the computer that created the site. When you upload VSD uploads the html files. When you go to another computer, you do not have that vnu file so VSD will not work.
Having pointed out what you cannot do, here is one way to do what you want.
1. Use an FTP program and upload the site.vnu file.
2. Now at the other end (work in your case), use an FTP program to download all the files including the site.vnu file.
3. Make sure all the files are in the same relationship on the new computer as they were on the originating computer.
Now you may be able to use VSD on the new computer.
Hope this helps with your project.

One caveat for that procedure: the .vnu file will expect all of the resources (such as images) to be in the same place on the new computer as they were on the old. When you first open the .vnu file on the new computer and it cannot find them it will ask one by one where to find each and every image. You will need to also download the files folder onto the new computer (as well as any files you added to the project using the "add files" feature) so you can point the .vnu file to them again.
One development trick I have used is to create a "resources" folder and when I add something into VSD I make sure it's in that folder first. Then if I need the project to be portable I upload that resources folder to the site so it's easily gotten onto a new system. Makes it much easier to duplicate the original folder set-up on the new system and makes the migration a little less painful.
