Just to put a period (or exclamation mark) on this one, I did call twice, but chickened out both times and hung up before my turn came to schedule an appointment. Besides, if butt was to be kicked on this problem, I wanted to be the kicker. I'd spent days on it.
It took another day, purging the computer and server, uninstalling and reinstalling VSD (just in case of a glitch), and then going over each step of the rebuilding process line-by-line.
And I found the problem. The pathway to the server was correct until I checked the profile name, at which time the pathway became "stonycreekstore/public_html" rather than the other way around. So my files were loading outside my folder. I deleted the profile name (which had survived the reinstall), put in another with the correct pathway, and joila! It worked fine. And it was simple, if I'd known what I was doing. Odd it uploaded correctly the first time, though.
I told y'all I'm "inexperienced." (Trying to find other words than ignorant.)
Thanks to Scott and all of you. You'll find my next question in a few minutes over on the flash menu builder forum. I might actually build a website if I live long enough.
