You can try using Windows' "Character Map" utility. In Vista, under the start menu, it can be found in Accessories > System Tools. I don't know if this is the same with other versions of Windows. The program's file name is "charmap.exe". It will probably be showing the Unicode character set. You can switch that to "DOS: Western Europe" if you want to limit your choices to characters supported by the iso-8859-1 character encoding used by VSD.

I read Sarah's post below regarding inserting the copyright symbol...

(in VSD when I want to make the copyright symbol, as i"m typing the text and then need the symbol, I do the following, - Hold down Ctrl and Alt at the same time and press C. Then hold down Alt and type 0169 on the numbers pad. Voila, there is the symbol and you can complete your sentence.)

This doesn't seem to work for me. any suggestions for inserting the copyright symbol?

I do not understand the (Hold down Ctrl and Alt at the same time and press C.)
On my computer I just hold down Alt and type 0169 on the numbers pad and when I release the alt key the © appears. I just did it in this page. You must be at a text input and the number lock must be on.

0169 - ©
0174 - ®
0188- ¼
0189 - ½
0186 - º
0247 - ÷

This works in Word, Notepad,VSD, or you can try it in your browser link or search bar above.

Thanks Cary. The windows character map is in the same location in XP pro as well and worked fine cutting and inserting it.

Jay - I have tried the alt 0169 several times and nothing. It does work in Word and notepad fine but not in VSD. My laptop doesn't have a side number pad so maybe thats causing a problem in VSD?? Thanks for your help

Jerry,

That's exactly the problem. You have to do it with the number pad. I presume your laptop has some keys mapped as a number pad using a function key; you could experiment with holding down alt+function and then the "number keys" to see whether that works.

You say you can get it to work in Word and Notepad, it should work in VSD. However if you can get it to work anywhere, do a copy and paste it in VSD.

Notebooks can be a pain without the keypad.

I can do it on my notebook, but I have to use the function Key to turn on the number lock on the function keypad. I then have to use the number keys shown on my letter keys in the middle of the keyboard. I hold down the alt then type in 0169 using the fake number pad keys.

Or you can type charmap in your 'Run Command' on XP just in the start menu, or in the 'Search programs and files' blank in Vista and Windows 7. Now Run the charmap.exe program and then double click on the Copyright Sign on the Character Map program that opens, and select copy. Now paste this in your text box in VSD.

This program is installed on most windows machines.
If you cannot get that to work then copy the following from this posting.

Paste it in a notepad file and save. Whenever you need it then open the notepad file, copy the symbol needed and then past in VSD.

Once you have it in VSD you can copy it from your web page whenever you need it.

Laptops are fun, Really,

Thanks Jay I didn't even think to use the function number keyboard because I don't think I've ever used it but that is exactly what worked. Thanks again!!
