VSD Inconsistencies - Page 1 - Post...

I am so frustrated. I designed this webpage and it looks perfect when I view it on any of my computers, but I'm told that some people see it incorrectly or with overlapping words. So I changed the reolution. I made it as small as I possibly could to fit the information in, and STILL, it apparently is completely screwed up on some computers.

What the hell is wrong? I don't understand what the problem is. I have spent countless hours changing it to a smaller resolution, and still it does nothing.

It is so frustrating because I can't see on my screen what is being described as being wrong--it looks perfect...and when I design it in the CoffeeCup VSD, it looks the same as when I view it in my browser, yet apparently that's not the case with some computers. So how can I attempt to correct something that I can't see?

What am I doing wrong? I really don't understand but I could not possibly be more frustrated.

Can anyone help?

Sorry, I couldn't identify a problem when viewed at 800 x 600 resolution. I will check it on my hi-res in the morning.

From what I understand the monitor has to be set and 96 DPI, the default for modern Windows PCs. If it's set to 120 DPI (to make screen text larger) or a custom DPI, then the text and other page content will overlap.

Ok, checked it again via two other higher res monitors and they looked fine. So I'm gonna have to agree with Cary on this one and say that the complainers need to check their set-up.

Thank you for all of your help, guys. Some issues could be the DPI, but one of the ones that's having problems is my mother, whom I spoke to at length last night. She just got a new laptop, with Windows Vista, and it seems like all of her settings were the same as mine, yet she was still seeing weird line breaks in the text, and large spaces in some of the writing...then in other areas, the weird line breaks were causing overlapping.

I had her send me ascreen shot thinking that maybe it was doing something weird with the font or something, but everything else looked the same other than the weird breaks. Any idea what that could be?

Are you using both the same version of browser? Also, maybe your mother is using normal fonts but in the browser she has increased the font size of text.

We're using the same version of IE, and the screenshot she sent me (attached) looks like the fonts are all correct...there's just weird breaks and overlapping with the text in a few places.

Scott sounds on the right track. I have made a lot of vsd sites over the years and when ever I had this problem problem, it's always boils down to 3 things:

1) browser
2) font
3) doctype(transitional is default and best, but you can try strict- under settings for new pages)

go to http://browsershots.org to test it in a lot of different browsers and maybe that will help you close in the problem. I always focus on ie and firefox so if it doesn't look 'clean' in a browser that makes up 1% of visitors, don't be too upset.

On the last few versions of vsd though, I find the only problems I ever have is if I mixed html on the site and have a error in my html script. I hope this helps out some.

I'm having the same problem as Joy. Text overlaps. Out of five+ viewers of the site who've provided feedback (all using standard browsers and PCs), it only looks correct on mine. It's like my own PC is the odd one out. I checked my DPI and it's set to the default of 96, so that's OK. I'm running IE7 in Vista Basic. I used a VSD template to set up my pages, using a standard font (Verdana). At this point I'm about to give up and try another app or outsource the site....I just don't have the time an energy to try to fix this, and we need our site to be readable. BTW, the URL is www.portlandapt.org
