I have seen a few sites created with VSD that have backgrounds other than solid color or photo and am wondering how this can be done. I have not been able to figure it out. Below are two sites that utilize this. Can anyone tell me how to do this?

In the Page Properties box, at the bottom under Page Background, click Image then browse to the image you have saved for your background. Next, go to Settings > Background Fill Properties and choose Continue background beyond the page borders.
You can also have 2 different backgrounds (for example; a solid color page over a pattern displayed on each side:

I got that, I take it then that the backgrounds these two example sites used came from somewhere other than VSD, as I don't see anywhere in VSD that could have created those backgrounds.

if you google textured backgrounds (free) you can find some great looking backgrounds -yes they are not provided with VSD! Here's what I found so far. Just click on textures in the external gallery.

this may sound daft, BUT here goes anyway

You can create your own backgrounds, and design them in vsd

add an oblong image the size you want to a blank page, then use the styles tool, to change its appearance to what you want

then preview it, and save as "template1" whatever you like (reduce quality in photoshop or similar)

you can then select it as your background image, this is just an example, but basically you can do it with any picture or scan or texture you can find

i will upload one i just did for you in about a minute, but if you go to my shop in signature, all my vsd product pages were done this way

I like to use Photoshop to make my backgrounds, but any image editing program will do. Google Photoshop backgrounds or textures (or web backgrounds) and you'll find hundreds of them, as well as tutorials for creating your own. And as Jewelcraft said, be sure to reduce the image quality as much as possible (use "save for web" in Photoshop) to keep the file size down.

just tried it on that background and it reduced it by another 25kb

I have been using save and reducing to low quality, which is obviously not the same. Oh and always .jpg is there a benefit in using another format?

Old dog still learning new tricks, but like many here I am not really very technical, only thanks to CC programs being so idiot proof that I have a half way decent website at all.

A lot of sites offer free background textures/images. They're easy to make - take photos of fabric, grass, water....whatever... then manipulate it in an image editing program such as Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, GIMP (free).... Just look for interesting patterns and textures, or parts of your photos that could be repeated to fill a background. Even a solid color can be a bit more interesting - use the add noise filter in your editing program for a subtle background texture.
I save as jpeg 'cause the file sizes tend to be smaller than png files. I try to save at the lowest quality possible that doesn't pixelate my pattern.
