Hi, ive just found your software.. and have spent the last 3 days going mad and learning site design.

I have created a site in VSD... is there a way whilst in VSD that I can quickly switch to view and add HTML... and then switch back to visual view again.

Basically I pressed CTR+ALT+H in VSD and added my meta tags... but its put them right down the page when I view source and obviously they want to be near the top.

Do the 2 programs combine.... or do I have to seperately open each page in html editor and add the code there.

If I do that... when I then reopen the site in VSD will it know that I have made the changes in HTML editor?

Does that make sense? http://www.unorecords.com if it helps to have a look.

Any other ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.. thanks - Matt :)

We have two different applications you can use to create your site: HTML Editor and Visual Site Designer.

The main difference between HTML Editor and Visual Site Designer is access to the raw HTML. Visual Site Designer will generate all the necessary HTML for you and allow you to focus on the design of your page. You can insert text, images, links, etc. and drag them anywhere on the page. You can even create shapes such as rectangles and circles, or add effects like glow, bevel, and shadow. Because everything is stored in the VNU file for Visual Site Designer, it cannot open preexisting HTML files to edit.

The HTML Editor, on the other hand, can open any HTML file and edit it with either the Code Editor or Visual Editor. The Visual Editor will also allow you to insert text, images, links, etc., but you cannot create shapes or effects within the program. Those would need to be done outside the software and inserted as images. Because the HTML Editor edits one file at a time, as opposed to the entire site, you have more control over things like filenames, directory structure, etc., and how these elements are uploaded to the server.

Both applications offer a built-in transfer client you can use to upload your site to the server. We recommend downloading trial versions of both applications (http://www.coffeecup.com/software) to determine which is better suited for your needs. VSD works with a proprietary file format and only exports the HTML for the site at publish time. There's no way to bring HTML back into VSD except by inserting code into HTML objects placed within the page in the VSD environment. If you plan to do a lot of work directly with HTML then it's possible you should stick to the HTML Editor. VSD is geared to the designer who wants to avoid working in HTML as much as possible.

I don't understand your header question. From your site it looks like the meta tags are placed in the <head></head> area, the placement within that area isn't significant that I know of.

You might be interested to note that VSD 6.0 was just released today. You can get the free trial from the same place you got 5.9.4. There are several enhancements and upgrades, as well as bug fixes.

ON EDIT: Scott beat me to it.

Thanks guys...

I've paid for both programs... Visual Site Designer and HTML Editor.

I guess I could just create a basic site in Visual Site Designer....

and then make more advanced changes later on via the HTML Editor.

Thanks - Matt

Keep in mind that VSD won't know about any changes made using the HTML Editor, so they will be lost if you then use VSD again and upload from it. However, you can certainly use it to quickly create a site and once you have what you like you can then stick with the HTML Editor to make future changes.

Question-
I cannot upload thru vsd to godaddy - i'm corresponding with a coffeecup rep to hopefully resolve. In the meantime, can i use your html editor to open my vsd file, save it in a more generic file format that can then be uploaded?

Thanks

You can't open the actual VSD file, no, though it's theoretically possible to open the HTML files it creates. That seems an awfully convoluted way to go about it, though: why not just use a regular FTP client to upload the HTML and associated files?
