VSD 7 - explain Publish menu, please...
VSD 7.11, Windows 7 Home, 9 GB Ram
I'm having a heck of a time uploading my web site through VSD. FileZilla is the only way I can get the web site to appear correctly after uploading.
Can someone please define for me the choices under Publish? What does Publish do? What does "Resync" do?
Do all old files on the server have to be deleted before re-publishing? How do I upload only those files that have changed since the last upload?
Thanks for your help,
Cheryl

Hi Cheryl,
When you publish a site for the first time, it publishes all the files that are connected with your project.
When you have made changes/updates to your site and publish it, only new or changed files are uploaded.
Re-sync means that everything will be re-uploaded, even if it has been uploaded before. I'm not sure if it clears out the contents at your server first though.

Cheryl-
Have you tried to use the Passive Mode? In VSD 7.0 under Publish select FTP Account Settings. In here select the Passive Mode box, and you can test the upload here as well.

Thanks for the explanation. I understand now.

As with other features in Coffee Cup VSD, the Publish is working this morning when it would scramble the pages yesterday morning when I used it to upload.
Thank you, Tim. I checked and did have the passive mode selected but still got scrambled pages with buttons being replaced with images and backgrounds replaced with images . . .
But, today is a good day and all is uploading/publishing just fine in VSD.
Thanks, everyone,
Cheryl
Glad you got things going fine. Sometimes in version 6 I found that I would have to go into the server and manually remove the VSD .vnu file then re-upload when the site got scrambled.

I have never used the re-sync function, I only ever use the publish function, but mine seems to upload every page, file and image associated with the site, every time, even if the only change I made was to add a comma or fix a typo on one page.
It can be a pain when 30 seconds after hitting the publish button you spot another typo and have to wait 25 minutes for the upload to finish, fix the new problem and upload the whole thing again. I know of others who use things like Direct FTP to make small corrections directly on the site, rather than go through the lengthy publish function each time - although you have to remember to make the same changes in VSD as well.
You can click the cancel button.
I know you see a lot of info on upload in VSD but it's just processing your site and uploading the changes once you have made your first publishing. You can verify this by doing a small change to one page and timing the publish time. Now do a resync and you should see a huge difference in these two times.
