Did you try redoing the text box?
I can't hear what I'm looking at.

Thanks Per! (gosh I feel like an idiot)

Eric; yes, I've done it several times. I've attached a .txt file with the name of the town with the characters ? and ?.... (I can type them in here but I doubt it will show up in the post).

Might be as simple as supporting unicode character set and not just ansi...

How about copying the one that works then just change the format of it to what you want and see if it renders correct.

Err, I think you're missing the point. None of them work. The only case where you can see those characters on my webpage is where it is hard-coded html. You simply can't type them or paste them into VSD. Might be that VSD uses 8 bits for a character rather than 16, so any (unicode) characters past FF (255) are lost or confused. Try using character mapper to copy/paste characters past FF (ÿ) and you'll see what I mean. (ÿ??) <- the characters after the ÿ are the ones that come sequentially after it in the character map (&0100, &0101).

Ok, I wasn't sure where you were going with this because I could see that you had them in an HTML box but thought you were still trying to get it to work by just typing it in. How about advanced text?

Yes, I do want to be able to use regular text boxes (not html boxes). I could use html boxes for all the text, but I'll have these characters in any number of places on the website and using html boxes in each case would be cumbersome. I put the html in to show what the text is supposed to be.

As for advanced text, I thought that only added effects and styles, so wouldn't help me since the problem occurs at character entry, not on rendering or publishing.

You don't need any effects added to the text to use advanced text. Just type alternate text.

While I appreciate your help, you're missing the point. When you type (or paste) certain characters into VSD (text boxes, button text, mouse-over text, alternative text), they get misinterpreted and the wrong character is inserted. If you don't want to change your keyboard, you can use Character Map to copy/paste some of these characters (past unicode 00FF) to see what I mean. (note to admins; sorry, I should have started this in another thread...)
