I'm building a website and I want to put a plain slideshow on the front page. No buttons or anything just something that when people go to that page they see this area where pictures are fading in and out by themselves no extra buttons or arrows for anyone to press... Can I do that with the photo gallary software or is something else needed for that?

Yes you can do that in Photo Gallery just use a skinless theme. You could also use a simple JQuery slide show if you concerned about Flash.

Yep you sure can, can turn off the gallery slide images, can turn off all buttons and even not have any themes involved. Works pretty slick for that.
