I make my first page and then I add a new page. Up pops a box asking me for a page title and page identification. I change the name to both. I then add to the new page what I want. I go to save the new page. I choose "save as" I save it under a new name and when I check on it later the new page is identical to the first page I made. What am I doing wrong?

Mike,
what I do is make my first, then go to add a page, fill the content of that page then click the floppy next to add page without renaming the site.
when the the pop up shows page title and ID--the title should ALREADY HAVE THE PROJECT(WEBSITE)name in it,all you have to do is name the page in the ID slot. if that makes sense.

In VSD, all the pages are saved in one project file (.vnu). If you Save As, you're creating a second project. Instead, create as many pages as you want, but just keep saving to the same .vnu file to update the project. When you save the project, VSD automatically creates the appropriate html files in the background and will be uploaded accordingly.

Note: If you want to see the html files, there should be a folder created where you saved the .vnu file on your hard drive (projectname.vnu_website). However, this folder is just an export of what is contained within the .vnu project file. Making manual changes to those html files with another application will not be seen when uploading through VSD again as the next saving of the VSD project will overwrite that export folder. Hope my lengthy response did not confuse you further. ;)

New user here, (and I like lengthy/details posts :) )reading old posts b4 posting, but I'm still a tad confused. A couple of questions please. (VSD 6.0 bld 6; WinXP)

1. When changing an existing page, does/can one SAVE just that page? Or are you supposed to just save the entire .vnu file with the File/Save or diskette icon?

2. If the site has been published, after you have save the file, then what do you publish to the web? The entire .vnu file again, or just the html page that was changed and saved?

3. So the recommended way to add a new page is to open an existing page, click add a new page modify and change?

4. In MS FrontPage I'm used to opening a page, making changes, and then SaveAs to create a new page. Looks like VSD is the reverse?

Any and all help is appreciated...Thanks,

Hi John. VSD works more as a group than individual pages (as w/ Frontpage). So, when you click Save, it should save any changes made on any page in the site. Similarly, when publishing, it should upload the pages that have changed since last published. So, you don't need to individually save pages nor upload individually.

As far as creating new pages, it is a bit reversed (create new 1st, not edit old & save as). Be sure to check out the "Standard settings for new pages" under Settings, as that helps create news pages with uniform settings. You can also highlight contents from a previous page and they'll copy & paste in the same position on new pages.
