Is this possible? Or do I have to change it each time it's uploaded? Not that it takes all that much time to do, I just want to know if I have the option of saving in shtml.

With VSD you can only save as .html files. If you change the extension manually, I'm afraid you will have to do that every time, yes.
With the HTML Editor you can save as html, shtml, php or whatever you like.
With the HTML Editor you can save as html, shtml, php or whatever you like.
