My first attempt at a website has been up and running now for a year, developed by trial and error in VSD 5.94 and now in 6.06.
I have now changed computers and downloaded various CC programs to the new system and have decided to completely redo my website.
My questions dumb as they may sound are these:
1 When I upload from new PC to my domain, will it completely overwrite the existing website and give me the option to delete the objects, graphics etc not now in use?
2 Should I delete the existing website first.
3 Any likely pitfalls you guys are aware of that I should consider.

Any ideas, thoughts gratefully received

If I were you, I would clear the server of the old stuff. But you can of course wait until you have the new site ready to launch.

I would backup your old stuff too for future reference, one never knows when one will all of a sudden realize they wanted to keep that nice graphic of <insert item here> and find they no longer have it, or have to retype that paragraph or page, that you could have just copied and pasted from the old site

What happens to the website space so to speak when their is no website there, in other words what does a visitor to the site see in between removing the old site and uploading the new?

Well if you upload it right away after removing it, then there shouldn't be much of a lapse. If you take it down for a while then you can always put a temporary page up stating you're updating or something which is always a good idea too.

And no worries on the guys and gals thing lol I say it all the time too

1-Yes it should, which is the same thing that would happen if you hit the "re-sync" button from within VSD.

2-Good advice from Inger. It couldn't hurt. I try very hard to keep my server space clean, but you don't HAVE to do this. VSD does a fairly good job of removing unused files.

3-Nope. VSD is a good software and everything should proceed glitch free. If you do have problems let us know!



If you want to put a temporary page just create a single page in VSD (a completely new site) and upload, OR do it manually in notepad using HTML and just name the file "index.htm or .html" (depends on your web host how you name the index page, some don't care either way lol).

If you don't do anything but just delete the site, visitors will get an internal server error and may just assume the site does not exist... may be better to do it over night so users are less likely to try and visit the site, UNLESS it's a site that is accessed internationally in which case it really doesn't matter when you do it.

Just bought another domain purely for testing on one of these free virtual server sites. so can try various things before going live on main site.
