Refreshing page after uploading site...

Reading through this forum, I see that others have run into the problem of missing/distorted images appearing on web pages after a site has been updated from VD. Refreshing the page in the browser fixes the problem. I suspect that VD reuses image names, thus the need to flush the browser cache to force the reload of images (I confess to not understanding browser caching).

My question, then is what other folks are doing to force a refresh after a site update? I resorted to turning off caching in meta tags (not sure how well all browsers honor those). What other methods do people use?

Thanks,
Garrett

Press F5 on your keyboard will fix it right up for you :) Turning cashing off with meta tags will work also set the page expiry date also will work but I don't like that one :)

Not sure if he means for himself or for others there David, but I was assuming he meant to force others to refresh his site when they visit? I didn't know any answers so didn't say anything lol.

Right, I'm concerned about usability. I want to avoid the "hit refresh if the page isn't displaying right" message. Meta tags no cache is about all I can figure to do but it is a blunt-force approach.

I do believe that this is a personal seting on computers.
I know deep within Internet Properties there is a way to set things so that each page visit loads the most current window. By default, most computers are set to load the last viewed window however for the speed of loading a page.

Once again though Tim, he's looking for a way to do this so his site does it automatically for his viewers, not how to do it on his own computer. Us all knowing how it's done doesn't make it happen for our visitors unfortunately hehe. Wish it did, but.... He needs a script or something to add to his site so that it refreshes for his visitors on it's own so they don't have to do anything to their computers to make sure they are seeing the most current version of the page.

I think this is primarily a problem with non-IE browsers. I seldom have this problem using IE and it's a constant issue with both Firefox and Chrome. Firefox and Chrome both cache pages and the newly updated files are passed up due to their already being in the current cache. Most casual users have no idea how to go about changing the browser preferences if they are using the alternate browser choices.

Fortunately MOST of my users are using IE and the problem seldom/never poses an issue.

Use htaccess to prevent caching.
