publishing / FTP / domain name...
I am new to VSD. The publish option in the program doesn't connect for me so I've been uploading using FTP which is working fine.
I hope someone can understand what I'm asking. I do have a good handle on directories and directory structures but I'm not sure if I can make my question clear:
As I've been building, I've been uploading to a test directory (and then to look at it on the web, I just type in the entire name to see the website:
http://artisan-construction.com/AC2/ind … index.html)
When I move this into the folder that the domain name points to, I presume that I will move a folder called " index-v6_website" that contains all my files and also a file called "index-v6_website."
My question is do I have to change where the domain name points to? To the "index-v6_website" folder so that the browser will pick up the "index.html" in there?
I am not excited about doing that for a number of reasons - mainly links that already exist in a lot of places to some files that I want to leave exactly where they are.
I'm confused.

Hiya debra,
If the site will be residing at http://artisan-construction.com then no you shouldn't need to change a thing. If you plan it to be somewhere other than in the root directory of your server then yes you'll need to point the domain to the correct location.
As long as you put the index.html (or php whatever the case is for the index file) into the main root directory, your domain will automatically read that as the home page.
In your case if you plan the site to actually be residing in "index-v6_website" directory, then you will need to adjust your domain to point there. The other option could be to get another domain name also which would point there.

Well confusing yes indeed! Hi Debra,
Let's see if I'm confused as well lol
First you made a website, when you saved it, you saved it as index?
which of course made a folder called index-v6_website how cool...
What I would suggest you do at this point if uploading via an ftp client is to open this index-v6_website folder and highlight everything in it, and upload those files and folders to your root dirctory, in some cases it's public_html or blank, or just a forward slash.
However in doing so you will need to make the changes to your links as needed since you are no longer using the other (test folder).
May I ask with whom are you hosting with? maybe we can help get you connected using the built-in ftp in Visual Site Designer. worth a go don't you think?
It should be the same settings you use in the ftp client....
alittle late I guess lolhttp://emoticons4u.com/cool/1245.gif

So...
Wolverana,
just let me make sure of what you're saying: I can just take everything out of the index-v6_website folder and move it to the root directory? I wasn't sure if it needed that folder to function properly is what was causing my confusion.
Bruzer,
Ipower. It would be preferable just to be able to publish from within VSD. I'm not sure I want to mess with it right now, however. Is the best way to get help, at some point in the future, to just post a new thread?
Thanks so much to both of you. This makes complete sense to me!

Yes if you're planning your main domain to be your main site for the pages you're working with in VSD then by all means publish it right to your main domain insted of that folder you've been doing it to. As bruzer mentioned you'll need to alter the links of things that are pointing to the folder you've had it in so it's going to the correct locations. I would suggest you do that in VSD and then publish from there if you can. But if not then do it with ftp and just upload the files to the root area. Be sure that if you have any folders inside the "index-v6_website" folder that you make sure they go into the root directory also so that those links will not be broken, such as an "images" folder or similar.
NOTE:!! Be sure you have backed up any files/folders that are already in your Root directory before you do this so something important doesn't get overwritten. Chances are you will have files/folders with the same names so be sure to watch for that also.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
