Problem making links - Post ID 92125

The site I'm making is for a financial club and will have about 100 pages. Most of the pages will be reached from an 'archive' page where I have meetings for each month (several years) listed. I have made a bunch of pages that I will be linking to from the 'archive' page. (The 'archive' page is reached from a link on the index page.) But when I try to link, the pages that I made are not on the list in the little drop down box. They are on my computer in the file that I made for all of them. I've been doing a "save as" on each page in order to get them into the file folder. Is that wrong?

Also - how do I open the files that are in this folder? I can't seem to.

And why do most of my files say 'website' after them? There is only one 'site'. The other files are just pages.

I've been using Dreamweaver, but am not happy with the last version. VSD seem like a good alternative, but the file structure is confusing if not non-existant.

Using Win XP - site not uploaded from CC yet. Please help!

Hi Marilyn,
If I may, to make a link you need to highlight the text first ( If you know this already excuse me ) the files folder holds only the images you have used in your website.

Everytime you do a "save as" it will make a folder with "_website" so basically don't do it!

If you wish to have a link on your index page linking to your documents I would suggest using the "link to document " option then it will save a copy of your file in the Download folder located in your files folder. try this for all your archived files.....
I made a video of a so called file structure of Visual Site Designer if you care to take a look.

I hope this helps......please let us know.:)

OK, so I made the mistake of doing a lot of files 'save as' and now they are all listed as 'website'. How do I get them to be just pages in the one website so they will show up and I can link to them? I know how to make the link, but the files that are 'website' just aren't there to link to.

I will checkout the video. Thanks.

How many _websites are there?
Is the archive page made in VSD?
which version of VSD do you have?
Vista or XP?

from the archive page ( if I understand correctly ) you will have links linking to a certain month or year, so will they be linking to an html file or txt document?
In either case I would (from the archive page) link each one by clicking on " link to document" then VSD will automatically add those files and place them into the download folder that is located in the files folder, so there is nothing you need to do but link them. :)

In my opinion I would open VSD using the open website and choosing the vnu file, go thru every page and make sure everything is looks correct. Then I would minimize VSD delete all but 1 of the folders _website, though you should be able to tell which was the first http://kellyinfo.com/web/vnuxample.jpg cause of the date.
when you delete do not empty the trash bin until your sure you can reopen the correct site.
When saving just click save and it will over write the vnu, without renaming, and it will place all the html files in it's folder again you have to do nothing at this point.:)

Hope I explained it right for you.

I have v6 of VSD (just downloaded a couple days ago) and am using WinXP.... Here's the set up:

When I go to 'open website' it shows 7 that say 'website' but if I try to open them, I get 'file' folder then a 'download' folder and there is nothing to open. Below that is 7 items with green icons, such as: about us, bylaws, index, etc. If I open any of those the index page comes up.

Note: I made a 'master page' that has the logo and nav bar at the top, which I use to make all the individual pages.

When at the index page, I do a 'show page' and choose archive. On this page I have a line (potential link) for each month for 8 years. I want each line to link to an html file that I just made in VSD. There are 16 'website' files that I made for the months in 08 and 09. (I guess I used 'save as' for these files). If I link to a document in a 'website' then the links on the nav bar do not work correctly.

Yesterday I made pages for each month of 06 and 07 and made links on the archive page. Those links worked fine yesterday, by just doing a 'save'. HOWEVER - today the links are NOT on the 'archive' page and I cannot find the pages I made!!!

HELP!!!

No there wasnt! I'm still trying to understand your problem lol
I do have a couple questions, are the html files made in VSD also?
if not then they wont show in the drop down menu.

Ok when you open a website made in VSD you don't open the _website folder, your suppose to open the vnu which is the total design you made and named. SO for example if I made a website called dons_photos then there would be a folder named donsphotos-v6_website. this will hold all the html file (your pages) in that folder, any images you used will be in the website folder , in the files folder. now if you have extra html files made with dreamweaver or other html editor then what you would do is have a link on one of your pages and linked to "link a document" from your hard drive. this will put that file in the download folder that is in the files folder, and it will add that html into VSD.

I am certainly lost because of the amout of _website folders you have lol sorry, but if it were me I would start over fresh and get rid of all those extra _website folders if it's only a couple hours of work. Marilyn I do appologize for not being able to help you here, but maybe if you even put in a support ticket the gurus can help you further than I.:|

I completely started over and all the files were made using VSD. I'm afraid to start deleting things as I'm afraid I'll lose something forever (guesss I will tho as I don't see an alternative). I copied text from old website (on my computer). Although I did put the photos into a new file so I could find them easily. It would be more like 3-4 days work that I am losing. I cannot use the 'link to document' for this and the pages all have a nav bar at top and bottom and they don't work correctly when I do.

Ok, I think I understand better - thanks for that. Still doesn't explain where all the files went that I created yesterday....

I have deleted the extra 'website' files and recreating the 08 and 09 files that were in them. Now, the other files that were missing are there and the archive file with the links is there. Don't know what happened but it's going better now...... Thanks Bruzer and CUTE avatar!
