The xml is what your should submit to Google for indexing. The HTML page is for human interaction.:)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

OK, I manually made up a site map with the VSD. Seemed to be the easiest solution to the problem

I agree. You don't have that many pages and since VSD is publishing to the same folder it's the best solution. I tweak my html sitemaps even when there published to a sub-folder.
