Opening an HTML file - Post ID 96570
I have just bought Visual Site Designer 6.
So first step is to open an html file of an existing web site on my computer.
Am I totally stupid? (Please don't say yes)
You go to file open an existing web site and what do you get?
Nothing - as the only file extention that can be opened is .vnu
and I haven't got any .vnu files
All I want to do is edit existing html files but they are invisible in this programme.
So how can I access my index.html to get the ball rolling please?
I tried to open index.html and I was sent straight to the online web site
So I still can't edit the files

We offer two different applications that you can choose from which will allow you to create your site: HTML Editor and Visual Site Designer.
The main difference between HTML Editor and Visual Site Designer is access to the raw HTML. Visual Site Designer will generate all the necessary HTML for you and allow you to focus on the design of your page. You can insert text, images, links, etc. and drag them anywhere on the page. You can even create shapes such as rectangles and circles, or add effects like glow, bevel, and shadow. Because everything is stored in the .vnu file for Visual Site Designer, it cannot open preexisting HTML files to edit.
The HTML Editor, on the other hand, can open any HTML file and edit it with either the Code Editor or Visual Editor. The Visual Editor will also allow you to insert text, images, links, etc., but you cannot create shapes or effects within the program. Those would need to be done outside the software and inserted as images. Because the HTML Editor edits one file at a time, as opposed to the entire site, you have more control over things like filenames, directory structure, etc., and how these elements are uploaded to the server.

I'm using VSD 6 Build 6. I just started, and I don't know how to change the .vnu extension to an .html extension. is there a step that I need to take with the Coffee CUP HTML progam.
I've le for hours to find a means to use my pretty Coffee Cup site as my index.html file and cannot find the key.
I'm abandoning dreamweaver after 14 years.

.vnu files can ONLY be opened by VSD. As I understand it, you will get ALL of your pages in .html when you "publish" the site.
Living the dream, stocking the cream

Do keep in mind that if you decide to start working on the HTML files you cannot put that back into .vnu format so you'll be set to have to do it outside of VSD after that. If you used Dreamweaver, which I did for years also, you'll find that the Coffeecup HTML Editor is pretty slick, and way less expensive than DW ever was. There are only a few things missing in it that I miss from DW, but to be honest it's not enough to make me pay those prices again and the team here is just awesome for customer service. Welcome to the forums also ed
