Migrating VSD site to another...

Am I missing something or am I up the creek without a paddle?

I designed a site using VSD and a few other tools for a slide show and a form build.

But since this time I have had to migrate computers.

The catch?..... How in the heck am I supposed transition the editing of my site to another computer when VSD has renumered and (named) all of my graphics files ( of which there are 165 approx) and when I open up the VNU file it references everything,... not by its newly renumbered file structure, but by the OLD NAMES on the old drive of the old computer etc. S**T!!!!

Remapping every picture would be a nightmare and there is no "import site" function in VSD.

The site is sitting pretty at www.specifiedcomponents.com but its is in need of significant updates and I have no way of knowing how best to proceed without doing hours upon hours of tedious guessing at which " numbered picture equals what.

H E L P ! ! ! ! ! Please!!!!!!

This nightmare can't be for real....... Coffecup sounded so good in the beginning. Now I'm hanging by my nosehairs hoping that I'm not in for a sorry Charley surprise.

Any wisdom is appreciated!!!

If you created and saved the site last in version 5.9.1 on the old system, this would be a simple case of copying the folder to the new system. It sounds like you have not saved it in the latest version so you will have this issue.

However on a good note, we are working on a feature update for 5.9.2 that will help users who have run into this issue. I hope to have that version ready by the beginning of next week.

Hi. You say you "migrated" to another computer. Is there any way at all to boot up the old PC just long enough to use it to modify your web pages using the structure that is on that computer? Unless the comp was badly damaged somehow, if it still works at all, that might save you a lot of hastle.
I had a look at your site. If it needs a lot of major changes, that might be the only reasonable way to get it done. If it was just a couple of cosmetic changes, that could be done (maybe) with a text editor, but you said significant updates.

Scott suggested that the newest version would have saved it in a way that you could follow his instructions. If you can start the old computer, maybe you could instal the latest version, save your work and hope it works from there? Just thinking out loud at how you could save your work and make the needed changes.

I just email you a beta of 5.9.2, hopefully this will help. However this is *beta* software and it could have some unforeseen results.

If the related files were moved from the old drive to the new drive, I don't understand why the file names would have been renamed. Unless, you downloaded the files from the website or are trying use the ones VSD exports to a folder after saving. The files VSD looks for would be in the original locations when they were added to the project. Before version 5.9.1, you'd have to have all the referenced files from the original drive (& most likely in the same paths) for VSD to load the site properly. I would hope "migrating" included moving over all of your data. :( If not, I'd go w/ Cliff on trying access the original drive to retrieve the original files needed, and then hope the new beta version helps restore what you need. That'll be quite a slick new feature if that works out.

Hi Guys,

Thanks to all of you who have been so helpful. I resurected what was left of the old drive and found the files , but its important to note that when VSD is looking for files itreferences the entire path all the way back to whichdrive/which user/etc. all the way down the line.

It was not willing to forego the drive and user data to redirect its path. However, once I got into a folder that had one of the pictures in it, other pictures in the same folder would foloow suit if they were originally located in that end folder, which turned out to be a mjor f***ing blessing in disguise.

Even though I spent hours creating new paths, I had to do it about 80 times instead of 240. So always something to be thankful for!.

And Scott thanks for sending me the 5.92 beta. I havent loaded it yet because I've been rushing like hell to make the changes to get me over the hump. So I haven't tried the FTP workaround file either yet. I had some other questions having to do with compatability before I upload and "Sync the site."

I asked this on another thread but since we're all on the same page here, I'll ask it here for continuity sake. (paste)...
Scott I finally got through mapping all the pictures from the old files to the new 5.9R version, but my slide show and quote form are not showing up yet and I'm not quite sure how to integrate them into my new 5.9 version on my machine before I dump the old site and upload the new 5.9 version.

Since I assume all of the file names are now changed is it going to delete all of the old numbered files off the server and replace them with the new picture filing syste?

And Is my slide show and myform data( HTML and files) going to auto link under 5.9 and syncethat information backwards into my 5.9 VSD on the computer or what?

I'm a little confused as to what i should or shouldn't assume.

I built the original site in VSD 5.1

Win XP SP2 etc.

Site is www.specifiedcomponents.com

See "China slide" show and "get a quote"

The site I've revamped in 5.9 is fundamentally the same but there are now a few more pages and a few changed link in the menu bars.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!
Patrick

There are a lot of things that could be set different, it just depends on how you added everything in. The fastest way to get any of our flash applications re-added in is to click on the element and then click the remove flash button. Then just re-add it back in. Then when you re-sync, everything will update itself.

Version 5.9.2 also has a few new tweaks.

I have done it all. Check connectivity: pass. ran the registry cleaner. Checked the firewall to pass vsd. No Joy.
I have five webpages to migrate from XP. What next?
I do not want to keep the XP computer forever.

Hey Cullen,

For what its worth you might want to try laplink pc mover. I used it to move all my files from my xp to my win7 and it worked flawlessly. I used the free version as it did all that I needed it to do.
I had some vsd sites on there and they work with no problems.

I moved everything and kept all files the same name.

Here is a link... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/ … -data.aspx

Good luck!
