I am currently experiencing this same problem - all of a sudden out of the blue links to PDF documents don't work, even though I've used the 'link to a document' button. It has worked fine in the past. They work in preview mode, but once uploaded an error message as follows appears
Not Found

The requested URL /files/Download/week 60.pdf was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I found re-syncing the site is the only way to make these links work for some reason:rolleyes:

Update. This problem has never been resolved for me. I have new websites that I have created for people using VSD 6, and every time I go back and edit the website, the link to a pdf no longer works. I have to unlink the pdf on every page, save/publish, then go back and relink it, save/publish, and it's fine. But that's a lot of work to do for a simple typo. Any updates to this issue?

Hi Jamie,
you may want to put in a support ticket and let them know, I'm sure they already do and it will be fixed in the next version, I've had people with the same problem but when they fixed it, it never happened again. yours is everytime which is strange indeed. So give them a hollar and ask the CC staff won't you. :)
(typo is user erro not VSD) or does it make it a typo...

Hi Jaime,

I struggled with this same issue for over a year and even put in a few trouble tickets about it. Here is the issue: You use the "link to file" tool within VSD and what it's supposed to do is create a link on your website in which users can click to download a file from your hard drive (which VSD uploads/stores to a special folder on your hosting server [directory/files/downloads]). It works fine the first time your site is uploaded, but when you go back to make another change to your web site and you wish to upload the changes, you discover that VSD has "forgotten" the location of these linked files on your computers hard drive, forcing you to find and relink every single one of them every single time you wish to upload your web site. If you don't relink the files, VSD actually DELETES the existing files from your directory/files/downloads folder when it updates your site. This can get extremely tedious!

I have tried and tried and tried, yet not been able to come up with a solution to this issue (even in the newest version 7.0), so I have been using what Jorgery mentioned above: copy the files to a folder that I created myself on my hosting server and manually insert the link into VSD so that VSD is no longer managing the link. VSD is a great software but it's not perfect, so sometimes you need to create a work-around. I hope this helps.

I am not aware of any issues with the link to a document option after Build 15. This was one of the big items we addressed in that update.

Hey Scott,

I know that when I downloaded version 7.0 I specifically noticed this was an issue that had not been fixed, which is when I gave up on it ever being fixed and created my own work around, though I haven't tested it since downloading the newest build (build 18), so let me test it again.

5 minutes later...

It works now! You guys fixed it in the latest build! AWESOME! Well thank you for fixing this, and please accept my apologies for posting inaccurate information in this thread. I guess I should really be sure to test things with the latest BUILD before I decide they are not working. I'd just been waiting a very long time for this to get fixed and I guess I had prematurely given up on it.

Kudos to the developers!

I found that after an upgrade to VSD 7 the .pdf files were no longer linked. However after re-linking them have had no further trouble.
I have found that to link a .pdf file you must frst create the link, browse to the file (on your desktop or where ever), and Save the page. After saving the page you need to come back and link it to the Files section of the site. The file should be in the Site Name/Files/Download folder of the site. Once the link points to the download folder of your site it will work correctly.
If you don't link it to the Download folder, the link is looking for the file on your desktop (or where ever.)

Really? The software should absolutely do that for you, as most users would never figure that out. Are you using build 18?

I'm going to have to re-read this thread until I comprehend what is going on and I get my problem resolved. It sounds similar in that I linked files that I moved into the \download directory, previewed them fine locally. But when it comes time to publish to the ISP server, I get messages during the upload that VSD build 18 can't find the files. The message is showing the path to the directory above the \download directory.

I selected "upload anyway" and then ftp'ed the files to the \downlaod directory on the ISP server. The active site works fine then. But the next time I go to publish, I get that same message that VSD can't find the files. I even deleted and recreated my "Click Here" text that contains the link to the files. That didn't work either. VSD doesn't seem to want to relinquish the path where the files were originally stored on my local drive. I am obviously missing something!

Robert, VSD might have two references to the file in question. Click on Edit then remove files and look for the file and remove it.
