Is there a Help link about adding a...

As you can see from my other posts, I'm pretty much starting over with Coffee Cup. I have a "Welcome Page" that I did as a test. I have a couple of pictures, a little text, and a juke box just to learn how to make it all work. OK, I've gotten that far.

Now I want to add another page. This is another basic page with some basic text and maybe I'll add a picture or two. What I'm trying to do is have a personal web site with a Welcome Page, and then links to other pages, such as "About Me," "Our Family Geneology," "Quotes," "Family Pictures," etc.

When I am ready to publish all it wants to do is replace the first page with the second page. IE, when I want to publish the "About Me" page it over rides the "Welcome" page.

How do I create these sub-links? I did a search but didn't find the info I wanted. There may be such info already here, and if so maybe someone can post the link.

Thanks!

Don, In the top left corner click on "Add Page"
To place links on your pages add some text, images or other elements to your page. You can select the things you add to your page then click on "Link" at the top of VSD to link them. When you click on "Link" a properties box will open where you can select one of your pages or type a direct url to a page somewhere else on the web. :)
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

I clicked "Add Page." When I click "Link" it turns all of the text blue. I read some of the help info and it got into setting up the "S Drive" and other things. I contacted Site5 that hosts my site and chatted with someone in their support staff and they never did figure it out either.

I have my main page, we'll call it the "Welcome" page. Then I click "Add Page." I want to make it the "About Me" page. I want to publish that. I then want to add a link on the "Welcome" page that links to the "About Me" page. I also want to add a link to the "About Me" page that links back to the "Welcome" page.

I've read the help section, and Site5 sent me more links to Coffee Cup Help Topics about this, but one got into "S Drives" and setting that up, and it just went on and on.

I want to add a page, be able to see what the URL is when I Publish it, and add that URL as a link from my Welcome page. I've gone to "add page" over and over and getting no where.

Thanks for the reply, but I'm still missing something.

Don these may seem a strange suggestion BUT here goes

If you started your website from a theme (ie) Casual Friday (in default themes)

The tabs you see across the top right (ie) home, about, services , stream are all exactly what you are after just in the form of a simple button

The theme has all those pages already in place (go to pages, icon, to see them) so all you have to do is remove the temporary text, and replace it with your own for each page.

And remove the AC Cobra (car) picture and replace that with your own picture

Learn by starting with a template like this, it will help you to understand how it all works.

PS :: for future reference its best to get all your tabs, buttons, (that you want repeated on every page) in place on your home page before making additional pages, or you get to the point where you have lots and lots of pages to edit and it can be tiresom (ie my delorean site in signature has over 30 pages)

I didnt start it, nor save it, as a theme. I just did "New Website" to do the first page, and I did a Save As the same way.

You may have given the big clue. These are just individual pages, I haven't started or saved anything as a theme. Should I go back and do a "Save As" that way?

Don, have a look at the Help guide (top menu).
It will give you a good overview of VSD and how to create your site.

Don't do a 'save as' for each page. When you choose New Website, give it a name ("my site") and save it as that. All your site files need to end up in the same folder (.vnu, Files, and whatever else you might add such as images should be together under "my site"). You'll need to start with a home (index) page, then add pages as needed. Just save these (as well as frequently saving your work) – Ctrl + S. Click on Page Properties to name your pages, then when you want to create menus/links they'll show up in the Links options.

Anyway... the help files will get you through the basics and there's plenty of help here to show you how to take your site way beyond basic. You may want to bookmark Eric's VSD how-to site for later ;)

I did give it a name...(my name) Welcome page. I saved the next page also, as "Quotes." They are in the same folder. They each have a name. Coffee Cup says both have been published. The "Welcome" is my home page. I don't see anything about an "index." I have the "Help" adobe file open and have read it. I have read other Coffee Cup Help links.

Again, as simply as I can ask. How do I add a second page and see its URL so I can link it to the Welcome Page? Then, how do I add the Welcome Page link to the second page?

I have my Welcome page open now. I click "Add Page." It opens a window. It says "Page Title" that says "Welcome (to my site). The next box says Page ID, and has "Page6" listed.

I have saved a page called "Quotes." I want that to be the second page. I get to this point and click Publish and it says it published successfully. But it never shows me the URL. At this point I just go round and round in the same circles.

This should be a very simple, very intuitive thing. Where is the URL to the second page called "Quotes." Where do I find it? It says it is published. It should be out there some where. There shouldn't be a need to read pages and pages of instructionals to figure this out. Where do I find the URL to the "Quotes" page, which it says it published. That's all I want to know for right now.

Your url = mysite.com

I guess your quotes url is mysite.com/page7.html (page id is page7)

If you give quotes page a title of.......... my famous quotes, and an id of quotes it will be at mysite.com/quotes.html

PLease note the . in .html

IF IF IF you were to open a NEW PROJECT and select a default theme, as i suggested before, you will be able to learn from it.

OK, thanks. I'll try this a while longer, but I have twelve links and almost as many photo albums I made with iWeb on a Mac that I have taken down hoping I could re-build them relatively quickly and get them back on line with Coffee Cup without much down time. But it's been over a week, and I've spent 2-3 days just trying to figure out how to do new pages with links to them on the main page. In iWeb it takes one click and everything is done instantly. If I don't get the hang of Coffee Cup this week-end I'm going to have to just stick with iWeb and learn more about Coffee Cup through a Coffee Cup domain when I have more time.

This is just taking too long, and I know there are easier and more intuitive ways. In iWeb I click "New Page" and all of the issues we are discussing here are automatically taken care of. I tried Coffee Cup because I'm a PC user and I'm trying to get away from Macs altogether, but there are still just a few things Macs do better, and this is one of them. It's not like the technology and know-off is not there. I would think any programmer could analyze iWeb and just convert it pretty closely for use on a PC. Any one who makes a PC clone of iWeb will have solved 99% of the problems that a casual web builder like me encounters.

I know Coffee Cup is a good program, but it's just taking too long when I can do the same thing intuitively and instantly on a Mac. I really don't like using a Mac for a lot of reasons, but iWeb is still proving to be the easiest, fastest, and most intuitive program for me. I think the best solution for me is to make the pages on a PC, save the pictures to picture folders, save the text to MS Word docs, put it all on a flash drive, and just do all the work on a PC and transfer the files to the Mac and publish from there.

As an example on productivity, I've added two more pages on iWeb since my last post here an hour or so ago and all I have to do is hit "Publish" and I'm through with it. With Coffee Cup I still have no clue how to even link the pages. In iWeb one click does it automoatically.

Thanks again. I'll try this a little more over the week-end, but this is just taking too long and I'm hitting one snag after the next that I never encounter on iWeb. Again, I'm sure Coffee Cup is a fine program. Maybe one day I'll have time to sit down and absord all this, but I've had my web site off line too long and am ready to publish it back on line through the Mac.

Hey Don,

I would love to help you get started with Visual Site Designer. It is an absolutely phenomenal program which gives every person limitless amounts of web design potential with the click of a button (Install Now!) :) ...here goes nothing!

1. First, you need to press F1 within the software. It is absolutely NECESSARY for you to read the Help file before being able to create a site to your utmost potential (which is what you want!)

2. Here are some links to articles that you should also take a look at. They'll help explain how Visual Site Designer works with different elements (text, adding images, etc.) You really NEED this knowledge in order to continue, or you'll find yourself stuck everywhere you look!

An overview of the software: (VERY IMPORTANT ARTICLE!)

http://www.coffeecup.com/help/articles/ … -designer/

How to properly add text to Visual Site Designer: (IMPORTANT ARTICLE)

http://www.coffeecup.com/help/articles/ … -designer/

3. Here are some tips to get you started as well:

You will be able to create a page by clicking New Page which is located on the top toolbar. You can adjust the size of the page here when creating it. Note that the length of your page can be as long as you would like and is lengthened by the size that you enter in the LENGTH of the page.

To adjust a shape or image, you can Shift + Left click the arrow on any of the sides to scale the whole image larger or smaller.

You will not be able to copy ANY text into your Visual Site Designer pages. You MUST use the Text boxes and create the text in a format similar to the one in the Working with Text in Visual Site Designer article. The best thing you can do to preserve your documents is create links to your documents that you can save on your website, so that someone can click the link to download/open the document for view.

To link something, just click whatever you want to turn into a link (it can be any object from a shape to an image to text) and then press the Link properties button. Here you can link it to another page in your Website, a URL of another website, an email address, or a document that will be added to your website files.

4. Here are some articles that will help you out as you get things moving! :D

How to create a link within Visual Site Designer:

A good example of how browsers will render your code differently:

How to add Flash to Visual Site Designer:

This should be all you need to get to mastering your site design!
