It's amazing how fast you learn but I'm still not quite sure what is the best file format to use for images. Can anyone enlighten me please?

Well the EASY answer is Vector, if you have the capability. But for purposes of VSD, you just have to experiment and use whichever format looks best. My site is mostly JPG and a few PNG because it just looked better in a few cases. (If you compress a JPG too much the image gets fuzzy....) GIFS only handle 256 colors, so those are good for illustrations. When using a GIF for a photo you just hafta see what happens when u preview it as a GIF in order to know how losing some colors is going to affect your graphic. Bitmaps look great but are large file sizes, typically upload slower. Do you have Photoshop for saving graphics? If so, you should know there are a few glitches in the way VSD handles graphics, feel free to discuss with me if you like.

Is it possible to have transparent graphics? I tried a gif file, but the background turned black.
