Image file names, Image file...

Hello,

Just building a new site and I have noticed that VSD 7.0 build 18 is for some reason occasionally saving a duplicate image file. So lets say I have an image named "fat duck" its saving it and calling it img_29 etc. This means that in my files folder I have two images that are the same but just saved with different names. I should point out that the images in question are only used once in the site on only one page.

I may be incorrect but currently I understand that if image files are named similar to web page key words this may be a benefit in SEO as all your "fat ducks" are pointing in the same direction. If VSD renames the image files this prevents it from working. Also if VSD creates duplicates this seems to get pretty confusing in the files folder with lots of images but your not sure which is being used where.

Can anybody explain what is going on here and why.

Thanks in advance

Hi Huw
VSD saves each page as a separate html file, so each page will have its images saved in the Files folder. If you have logo.jpeg on one page and copy/paste it to another, you'll have IMG_1.jpeg. Copy/paste to another page and you'll have IMG_2.jpeg... they'll all look the same, but you'll have a different IMG # for each page/place that logo.jpeg gets copied to. Also, if you have a PNG file with transparency and you copy it, VSD will take a "snapshot" of it and save this copy as a JPEG (so you'll see some background included with the image).
To avoid so many duplicate images, you can start with one page that has all the pictures/graphics that will be on all pages and choose to duplicate this page (under Add Page. You can also insert images from their original folders per page rather than copying/pasting (I would do this for PNG files at least).

As for naming your image files, go to Object Properties and put something in the Alternate Text box - like a title and description of the image (it won't matter if the photo is IMG_17.jpeg - the browser bots will be able to read your alt-text description.
