Just to clarify your step 2: SCC gives you the option to paste html at various points. This is where you would copy the html pages created in VSD. I use CC html editor to select and copy the html code.
Pages on my site that were created in VSD and copied to SCC are all my static pages, home page, about us, etc. In addition, most of my product pages content was created in VSD. A good example is:

This give you the capability to add images and links to the product text.
You can also copy the source code during preview.
