I asked Scott about this thing of having css3 with VSD, and he thinks it's no problem. You just have to add an external style sheet. So then you could go back to the 100% covering supersized image that we were talking about earlier.
I agree on the file size and loading time, but if the bg image has one pattern going down each side and the rest is transparent, it shouldn't be such a large file. Optimized in PS...
