How to backup website? - Post ID 8904

I want to keep an occasional backup of my website in case of file corruption, etc.

Is it sufficient to backup ONLY the VNU file? Can the entire website be reconstituted from this file? Or do you need other files, such as those in the myweb.vnu_website directory?

Thanks much,

Frank

Frank,

You may want to click on profile and change your forum name to something other than your email address, just to keep your spam level down.

The vnu file is important if you want to keep using VSD. You should also backup any images you use on your website, and when you do be sure to keep the same relationship for file folders. It would be a good idea to have an image file in the same folder as your vnu file and keep your images in that file. Then if you have to restore, the images are in the correct location for VSD to find them.

If you are concerned about website corruption, just get an FTP program (CoffeeCup has a free FTP) and download the entire site to a folder on your hard drive, and if a file or more get corrupted, you can just upload the damaged files using the ftp program.

Bill
re your response to backing up a web site.
You mentioned using FTP and downloading your complete web site.

Do you mean tagging each file for downloading to a folder on my hard drive?
I have had serious issues with "backup" files not working.
My site is www.medset.ca
Thanks

Jerry,

What I mean is to use an FTP program to download the entire site to a hard drive. That will not work for someone with a very large site and lots of images, but for someone with a small to medium site (like me) downloading to a hard drive or flash drive is a great way to backup.

The specifics will depend on the FTP program you are most comfortable using, but generally, I use a CTRL-A to highlight every folder and file at the root, and I download. If I am downloading to a directory I have previously used, I will allow overwriting. If I am setting up a new flash drive, I will install PortableApps, then use a PortableApp FTP to download everything to my new flash drive.

The idea is to have something you can use to repair your site if the host backups fail and/or you need the site back up NOW.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the info, but I think I posted the wrong question. I only use VSD to update my website. If I lose VSD or its required files, I will no longer be able to update.

My question really is: What do I need to backup in order to reconstitue a working VSD website on my computer? Is it just the VNU file, which seems pretty big and may contain my whole site? Is it that extra directory that gets created by VSD? It is not obvious - when I import pictures, create HTML, and do various cut and pastes, it is not clear if the material is sucked in, used from its original location, or what.

Thanks for your continued help on this!

Frank,

The VNU file is a must save, and any extras that you have added.

If you have images, your best solution is to have the images folder in the same folder as as the vnu file.

If you have added any CoffeeCup flash such as the Flash Firestarter files, those should also be part of your backup.

If you have added any HTML via the HTML tool, you would need to save that as well.

VSD can recreate the website pages, but does not internally store the images and other extras. VSD will expect everything to be in the same relationship after a restore from you backup as it was when the backup was made. This can create issues if you have your images stored in a different folder. Another problem would be if you have files stored in "Program Files" and shift to a different OS such as XP Pro X64. When you install programs, they are now in "Program Files (X86)" (or something similar). If you use anything from that area (such as CC graphics) VSD will have a problem finding them, but should give you the option of pointing to the new directory.
