How do I lock an object? Also...
Hi-
Is there a way to lock an object's position on a page? I find myself inadvertently moving a container, for example, when I'm trying to move something within it. This happens even when I've moved the containing object to the back.
Also, is there a way to select the next/previous object with the keyboard, or do I have to use the mouse?
Sorry if these are covered in the Help -- looked, but could not find.
Thanks-

I don't know about the next/previous choice, but unfortunately, there's no way to lock objects/layers in VSD
. It's a much requested feature, so maybe one day....
For now, if you accidentally shift something, click CTRL+Z (on a PC) to undo the move or use Edit > Undo. If something needs to be kept very exact, make a note of the X and Y coordinates (will show at bottom right of screen when an object is highlighted). If it gets moved, use the right/left arrows and the up/down arrows to get it back in place – watch the X (across) and Y (vertical) numbers while you move it to get it back to the original position.

One other thing I forgot – you can group things together. For example; if you have some text placed over a shape, click to select the text then shift/click to get the shape, go to Object (top menu) and click Group. You could also make larger groups (just keep shift/clicking) while you're laying your site out then un-group them once everything is in place. I often group paragraphs and headlines so if I accidentally drag something I won't lose any alignment I have in place.
Have fun with it!

Thanks for that. I'm not having trouble so much moving things as selecting what I want in the first place.
For example, if I have a Text box which is over a larger containing shape, I often have to try several times before I select the text box instead of the container. Is there a "sweet spot" I should aim for? I end up having to deselect the container, then I try again, then rinse & repeat until I finally get the selection I want. It would be helpful if I could turn on some faint outline of the objects or something.
Thanks again-

Try to click right on top of the text itself, like within a letter. I think the closer you get to the edge of the text box (which you can't see until it's clicked on
) , the more chance there is of getting the object instead.

I have tried that, and when it doesn't work I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, hence the frustration! Bring to front/send to back doesn't seem to help in these instances, which makes no sense to me. Anyway, I'll keep at it...

Unfortunately, the Send to Front/Back options are just that, they're still clickable.
