I had been advised that my hit counter on my site would get the site classified as spam because of the advertizing associated with the free counter so I removed it. I went searching other sites today and on a competitors painting web site he had a hit counter that is plain and with no links or ads on it I tried to copy the html code for it from his source pg and add it to my site with the VSD app have not been able to get it to show on my site by adding in an html snippet Here is the code that I copied could someone tell me how to translate it onto my site?

<img alt="" src="/~site/Scripts_HitCounter/HitCounter.dll?CMD=CMDGetImage&amp;HCID=15568990&amp;style=Odometer&amp;dw=112&amp;dh=38&amp;digits=4&amp;borders=1" height="38" width="112" border="0"></div><!-- </hs:element55> --><!-- <hs:element56> --><div style="position: absolute; top: 895px; left: 0px; width: 786px; height: 144px; z-index: 21;" id="element56"><div align="center">

Maybe I need to put the image code in the files foler or something like that
do I have to copy the image file and save that to the files folder for the site?

Greg, copying someone else's counter code won't work, because when you create a counter, it is given a specific ID pertaining to the site of the one who created the counter account in the first place. So, even if the counter you copy will count the visits to YOUR site, it will also count the visits to the site where the code was copied from. And the other site owner will get some weird statistics and wonder who else is using his code.

It happened to me once, that one of my site designs, css and html, 'line, hook and sinker' and everything, including the counter code, was copied by a Russian for a real crap site, and I discovered it in the counter statistics. I had to go through Whois in order to find contact details and then warn that other guy. I wrote to him in three different languages, and it took me over a year to make him take down that site.

Yes I deleted that copied hit counter code and put in another free one it is up now and working and has a link to the free hit counter site and says free hit counter underneath it. Does not require an email address or any info other than the site url so it seems that it will probably not be classified as spam
Why does the offending site have to come down? You meant remove the hit counter from the site yes?

Greg... Think it was mentioned earlier. Have you had a look at Statcounter http://statcounter.com/
I have used it since it first evolved. Incredible amount of info on your visitors. Where they came from, what pages they enter and leave your site, duration, what words they put in search engine to find you even what browser and screen resolution they are using, plus lots, lots more impressive stats... all free.

Yes, that is the one I'm using, and I'm really pleased with it.

It was a portal site with links to all sort of dubious things; farmacies with all the 'medical' items and services you could think of, casinos, porn, money lending, illegal stuff, and as he had copied my design, he had also got my name and mail address included. So sure I wanted to get rid of it, I could do much better without that kind of 'advertising'.

I think the counter you have found now is OK, Greg. A link to its own webpage is no problem.

OK I removed the free hit counter and subscribed to the stat counter and placed the stat counter on my home pg just need to upload the new index pg code yet will do that shortly... I guess that when it was mentioned earlier I had associated it with the site provided info of which I had tried and did not get much info from it but this one gives hit counter and the added info which is great just did not understand what was being submitted to me at the time

Since I put the stats counter account up on my site the animation background image has stopped running with the Firefox browser but is working fine with the chrome and internet explorer browsers. Would a browser setting prevent the background image from running? Anyone one know off of the top of their head what setting that would be?
Is the anim running for you with the Firefox browser?
