Hi, I have quite a problem for me, any help most welcome.

I built a new website to replace a terrible old one. The new site is small at the moment, only 5 pages and no CSS.
The site address is carsonsflooring.com
I used VSD to build and upload. Upload said site was published successfully.

I can't see the site on the www. I get a welcome page saying this site is under construction please check back soon. I did not write this page. I wonder if this page is by the original site designer or by the web host server. I can't see it in direct ftp.

Some points that may be useful.

The original site seemed to be mostly php pages.

The original site had 3 files outside the root directory, if memory serves they were called "bash" something something. they are not there now. When the new site is uploaded there is nothing outside the www.carsonsflooring.com folder.

Once again, this is a difficult problem for me, so any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Huw,
First Whom are you hosting with, that might help as well. second I would look on the server and open the folders you see and look for an html file named index or welcome (in some cases). if you find that then this is where your website would be installed to. then under the settings tab in VSD and ftp settings where it says WWW you would put something like public_html or htdocs or / or just leave it blank. please let us know.

Hi Bruzer,

Thanks for your reply. Since 1st posting I have managed to resolve the problem myself. My new site is now viewable on www all be it minus pictures at the moment but I think I can sort that out. I think the original problem was caused by the new web-site being loaded within some of the old one. Not sure how or why this happened as it looked like the old site was deleted. Anyway some deleting of files and uploading and downloading and generallly moving things around has done the trick. I think I just need to get the pages looking in the right place for the images then it will be job done! Fantastic :D I think I will celebrate with a beer.

You should reduce the sizes of some of those images. This one

http://www.carsonsflooring.com/files/IM … scape2.JPG

is about 2.5MB, but a 30KB 250x250 image would be fine and won't force visitors to wait for the page to load.

Hi Cary,

Thanks for that & I will be doing so in due course. Once I figured out what needed to be done to get the images to display I could see that one was very slow to load. I will look at the others also.

Thanks again

Reducing the size of images is a great tip that I'd like to apply to the site I'm working on. I, however, don't have the greatest knowledge of computers so if someone could let me know how to do this that would be excellent!

Thanks!

Hiya Jennifer,

The one of the very best ways to be sure your images are good from the start (unless of course you're using super huge ones that is lol) is to re-size them prior to adding them to the site itself so that VSD (or any other program such as SCC's etc) doesn't re-size them for you and reduce the quality. This isn't as hard as you might think. Just go to whttp://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/ and download the EZ Thumbnail program. Although it says "thumbnails" this very simple to use program is actually an image editor for a few little things like sizes and names etc. that you can even do mass editing of sizes with too (photo galleries come to mind where you might want all the images the same size or within a size constraint).

Just figure out page wise what size the images need to be for the space you're putting them in (multiples or just one by one) and then use the EZ Thumbnails program to re-size them for you.

DO keep in mind that not all images are square so you'll want to be sure you have the right sizing to keep the height and width proportionate. Usually when you size up an image within VSD to the square size you want it will put it into the code. I'm sure there must be a way to see the image details, but I don't use VSD so I'm not sure where that info would be gotten from.

EZ Thumbnails is definitely your easiest tool for resizing, just gotta know what size you want is all :)

OR,
you can give the CC pixconverter program a try,

http://www.coffeecup.com/pixconverter/

download the trial, if it does what you want - I'm sure it will - then it's another opportunity to support the great people at CoffeeCup Software by purchasing a license for it.
